In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court stated that lower courts issuing nationwide injunctions is not acceptable except in narrowly defined cases. The original case was one that was supposed to be regarding birthright citizenship. The court stated that district court judges who issue nationwide injunction have exceeded their authority granted by Congress. All liberals on the court dissented.
Justice Jackson issued a relatively nasty dissent, claiming that “The Executive Branch can now enforce policies that flout settled law and violate countless individuals’ constitutional rights, and the federal courts will be hamstrung to stop its actions fully. Until the day that every affected person manages to become party to a lawsuit and secures for himself injunctive relief, the Government may act lawlessly indefinitely.”

Nationwide injunctions have become a major stumbling block for President Trump’s agenda. Hopefully, this ruling will slow things down – it will not eliminate them due to some of the language in the ruling.
