The House of Representatives was scheduled to vote on $9.3B of cuts found by DOGE this week. But Speaker Johnson quietly canceled the votes, which immediately infuriated many Republicans.
“In early 2025, House Republican leaders tentatively planned to vote on a rescissions package proposed by President Donald Trump during the week of May 5, 2025. The package, expected to be sent to Congress in April 2025, aimed to cancel $9.3 billion in previously approved funding, primarily targeting foreign aid programs, the State Department, and public broadcasting entities like PBS and NPR. The rescissions process, governed by the Impoundment Control Act of 1974, allows the President to propose canceling appropriated funds, which Congress must approve within 45 days of continuous session via a simple majority vote in both chambers. This fast-tracked procedure was seen as a way to formalize spending cuts, particularly those pushed by the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, while avoiding legal challenges to unilateral executive actions.
However, the vote did not occur as planned. Several factors contributed to this:
Political Opposition and Lack of Consensus: The rescissions package faced significant resistance from both Democrats and moderate Republicans. Democrats argued that the executive branch was overstepping its authority by attempting to rescind funds already appropriated by Congress, viewing it as an infringement on the legislative branch’s power of the purse. Moderate Republicans and defense hawks expressed concerns about cuts to foreign aid, particularly after the controversial shuttering of USAID, which had already strained international relations. Additionally, some GOP senators were wary of being publicly associated with potentially unpopular cuts, especially after the 2018 rescissions effort failed narrowly in the Senate due to similar concerns…
In summary, while a rescissions vote was scheduled for early May 2025, it did not happen due to a combination of political opposition, historical caution from a failed 2018 attempt, White House reluctance, legal and public backlash against DOGE’s cuts, and competing legislative priorities. Posts on X also noted significant Republican discontent with the proposed cuts, suggesting that the package “ran into a buzzsaw of opposition” from both House and Senate Republicans, further undermining its chances.” Thomas Massie via Grok
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Speaker Johnson immediately became the subject of angry Republicans who accused him of being worthless as he called for another 4 days off for the House. To be clear, Rep Massie has been a thorn in the side of numerous Republicans who are trying to pass President Trump’s agenda. This particular vote was important. The pressure applied to Speaker Johnson revealed yet another problem for President Trump in his quest to complete his agenda.
JUST IN: House leadership has canceled votes originally set for this week to cut the wasteful spending found by DOGE.
