SecDef Austin Talked with Chinese Counterpart Wei Fenghe

For the first time since Biden became president, SecDef Austin spoke with his counterpart Chinese Defense General Wei Fenghe. It appears to have been 45 minutes of listening to the standard Chinese demands. The Pentagon stated there were no breakthroughs, which is no surprise.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III spoke today with the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) Minister of National Defense General Wei Fenghe as a follow-up to the recent call between President Biden and Xi Jinping. Secretary Austin and General Wei discussed U.S.-PRC defense relations, regional security issues, and Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

China reportedly told Austin that Taiwan is part of China. Austin reportedly told Fenghe that the US is committed to the “One China” policy from the Jimmy Carter administraiton. China knows full well that we have been arming Taiwan, and our lawmakers have visited there recently. They’ve been throwing a fit over it. But the US also has the Taiwan Relations Act.

After the Jimmy Carter administration recognized the PRC, Congress passed the Taiwan Relations Act in 1979 to protect the significant U.S. security and commercial interest in Taiwan. The TRA provided a framework for continued relations in the absence of official diplomatic ties. It also set out U.S. commitments regarding Taiwan’s security and empowered Congress to oversee various aspects of U.S. Taiwan policy. The law required that the president inform Congress promptly of any anticipated danger to Taiwan and consult with Congress to devise an appropriate response. The TRA also authorized the continuation of commercial, cultural, and other relations between the people of the United States and the people on Taiwan. Each subsequent Congress has reaffirmed the TRA to ensure that the absence of diplomatic ties does not negatively affect the continued strong, substantive relationship enjoyed by the United States and Taiwan.

Austin and Fenghe reportedly also discussed the unprovoked attack on Ukraine. In no uncertain terms, Fenghe told Austin that China will stand with Russia and there is nothing anyone can do to stop them. So basically, our Secretary of Defense had his ear bent for 45 minutes with no change in status.

No matter how global dynamics evolve, China will, as usual, strengthen strategic coordination with Russia,”

The United States needs strong leadership, as Communist China and Russia are simply doing their own thing and killing a lot of people in the process.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
