Rasmussen: Democrats ‘Most Opposed’ to Musk Takeover of Twitter

A new Rasmussen survey conducted just days ago shows Democrats are most opposed to the idea of a Twitter buyout by billionaire Elon Musk, apparently concerned that he would reinstate former President Donald Trump’s account.

In the survey overall, Rasmussen says “39 percent of American Adults believe it would be good for Twitter if Musk bought the company. Twenty-two percent (22%) think Musk’s buyout would be bad for Twitter, while 26% think it would not make much difference.”

Rasmussen also revealed 46 percent of Americans think social media platforms such as Twitter “need more free speech,” while 38 percent said it is more important for social media content to be moderated. Sixteen percent were undecided.

Trump used social media, especially Twitter, before and during his presidency to stay connected with his base. His critics disliked this and often complained about his “mean tweets.”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Musk recently offered to buyout all shares and take the company private, igniting fears among liberals he would bring Trump back online. Fox Business is running a report on Musk’s philosophy.

According to Rasmussen, “Fifty-six percent (56%) of Republicans think it would be good for Twitter if Musk bought the company, and those unaffiliated with either major party also favor Musk’s Twitter takeover by more than a 2-to-1 margin, with 39% saying it would be good for Twitter and 18% who believe Musk buying the company would be bad for Twitter.”

The veteran polling firm also noted that 68 percent of Democrats say Musk should not restore Trump’s account if his buyout is successful, while 73 percent of Republicans say Musk should reinstate Trump. Among Independents, 47 percent believe if Musk buys Twitter he should restore Trump’s account, while 36 percent oppose the idea.

This raises several questions, including what are Democrats afraid of? If Trump is such an unpopular figure politically, why should they care?

Also, Democrats repeatedly claim to support free speech, except, it would appear, for their political enemies. Do Democrats only support access to social media by people who agree with them?

As reported by Rasmussen Tuesday, “On the issue of free speech versus moderating content on social media, Democrats come down squarely in favor of moderation.

“Fifty-six percent of Democrats think it is more important for content on social media to be moderated,” Rasmussen reported, “while 64 percent of Republicans believe social media platforms like Twitter need more free speech.”

Meanwhile, among Independents, 49 percent say platforms like Twitter need more free speech while 34% think moderating content on social media is more important, Rasmussen said.
