Portland, OR group wants action on ‘gun violence’

A Portland group wants city officials to crack down on so-called “gun violence.”

A group calling itself The No Hate Zone is calling on officials in Portland, Ore., to “take action in addressing gun violence,” according to KATU News.

The Rose City has become the murder capital of the Pacific Northwest, with homicides setting a record in 2021 and surpassing Seattle in neighboring Washington, where slayings actually went down a bit last year. Portland logged 92 murders in 2021 while Seattle posted 43 slayings.

KGW reported The No Hate Zone “advocates for racial justice.” They have called on the city to take the following actions:

  • Declare a state of emergency in Portland around gun violence, with a focus on the impact on people of color, specifically Black men
  • Create a task force to address gun violence within the next two weeks
  • Identify local, state and federal funding to invest $10 million into the Black community, supporting community organizations addressing gun violence

At their website, The No Hate Zone declares “Gun violence is a sign of self-hate.”

Portland used to be known as a laid-back, liberal city with a focus on local arts and community activities. Over the past few years, however, with a far-left city council and mayor, and something of a takeover of the downtown area by anarchists, the city has taken on a new and darker atmosphere. During the summer of 2020, following outbreaks of violent protests in several major cities because of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Portland experienced almost nightly violence. One man was brutally gunned down while walking along a sidewalk after dark. Days later, the suspect in that murder was killed in a confrontation with law enforcement near Lacey, Washington about two hours’ drive north of Portland.

But is the focus slightly out-of-focus? Instead of concentrating on guns, what about the criminals committing the violence? After all, some gun rights activists note, stabbings are never called “knife violence,” and bludgeoning deaths aren’t called “blunt instrument violence.” Only guns are singled out.

Whether The No Hate Zone’s plea will be answered remains to be seen. The city is already off to a violent start as winter wanes and spring is looming on the horizon.
