Pelosi doesn’t understand widespread protests over nat’l shutdown

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told Fox News’ Chris Wallace she doesn’t understand why people are protesting stay-at-home orders.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, appearing on “Fox News Sunday” with host Chris Wallace, told the veteran newsman in response to a question about whether she understood why people are protesting, admitted, “No, not really.”

According to Fox, “As protests spread against the stay-at-home orders put in place by governors across the country, some prominent Democrats have panned the demonstrations as dangerous and ill-informed, saying the protesters risk spreading coronavirus among themselves and contributing to a spike in cases in their states.”

But the thousands of protesters, many of whom have been put out of work, some whose businesses have been shuttered, wonder whose side Pelosi and other Democrats, including Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, are on. Thousands protested at the Washington State Capitol in Olympia Sunday, only days after thousands of Michiganders shut down that state’s capitol city, Lansing, with honking vehicles jamming the streets and people demanding to go back to work.

Pelosi was raked over the political coals last week when she showed off her expensive refrigerator/freezers at her San Francisco home, filled with expensive ice cream. Some even dubbed her “Nancy Antoinette,” an allusion to the French queen who, according to legend, suggested that hungry French subjects could “eat cake” when they had no other food.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

ABC News reported protests in at least five states on Sunday, and more such events are apparently in the works, in other states. The Washington state protest was dubbed “Hazardous Liberty!” It drew between 2,500 and 4,000 protesters, depending upon whose count one accepts, and whether it includes all of the people driving cars through the streets of Olympia.

Washington’s Gov. Inslee declared the protest in his city was “illegal,” insisting that governors of both parties have taken actions to protect public health.

Mediaite is reporting that Dr. Anthony Fauci “is urging protesters not to demonstrate, and arguing that a premature reopening would “backfire.” It doesn’t appear to have had much effect as Americans across the landscape simply want to go back to work and pay their bills.

But the question that seems to be coming up more frequently is whether the extended shutdowns over the coronavirus are more political in nature than set up simply to keep people healthy.

Matters in Washington were not helped when the Seattle Times reported, “Washington’s stay-at-home order is currently scheduled through the end of the day on May 4, though it could be extended.” Inslee already extended it once.

Fox News is also reporting that Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill have “crafted a plan for what’s needed to reopen the economy safely and help businesses recover from crippling mandatory shutdowns. Whether that will gel is speculation at this point, but impatient Americans want to return to their jobs and businesses.
