Paris Shooting Kills One policeman, Wounds Two – ISIS Claims Responsibility
The Champs Elysees is  the iconic main street of Paris shopping – boutiques, tourist shops, cafes, and the Arc d’ Triumph. But on April 20, a gunman opened fire in a targeted attack, killing one police officer and wounding two others. ISIS immediately claimed responsibility, and a terrorism investigation has been opened.
A vehicle pulled up next to a police van parked alongside the road at about 9 pm local time. Police officers were both inside the police car and around it.The gunman jumped out of his car and opened fire with an AK47. One police officer was killed instantly.
The attacker then fled, and managed to wound two other officers. Police fired back and killed the attacker.
Accomplice
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
According to French authorities, the man was a Belgian national and known for having radical Islamic views. French police have issued an arrest warrant for another Belgian man who entered France by train.
Immediately following the incident, French police began searching a location in the Paris suburbs.
CTV News reported,
The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the shooting on Paris’ Champs Elysees that killed a police officer and left two others gravely wounded.
In a statement from its Amaq news agency, the group gave a pseudonym for the shooter indicating he was Belgian.
The attacker opened fire on a police van on the avenue before being killed.
The claim of responsibility came unusually swiftly for the group, which has been losing territory in Iraq and Syria.
And the pseudonym, Abu Yusuf al-Beljiki, indicated that the attacker already had ties of some sort to Islamic State extremists.
Elections
The French Presidential election is supposed to be held Sunday. All of the candidates expressed their condolences…and their concerns. Though at least one of the candidates is asking for the election to be postponed because of the attack, it is unclear if that will occur.
