Joe Biden is a liar, and in an age of fact-checkers, he’s not very good at it, according to published reports including one at Fox News.
Fox is reporting how veteran Washington Post Fact Checker Glenn Kessler—in a column headlined “President Biden, recidivist”—has been spinning yarns about Georgia’s new voting reform law. As explained by Fox, “Biden’s most egregious gaffe so far, in the eyes of Kessler, is the falsehood that a new Georgia law ‘ends voting hours early,’ which has already been slapped with the dreaded ‘Four Pinocchios.’” A “Pinocchio” is handed to someone making a false claim, and they step up in severity when the canard is continued.
When someone earns the “Bottomless Pinocchio,” that individual has told and re-told the fib at least 20 times, and Biden may be almost there.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
“While Biden has not yet repeated the falsehood about the Georgia law 20 times,” Fox reported, “he’s mentioned it in multiple public appearances over the past week. He repeatedly claimed last week the law signed by Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp would make it harder for working-class people to vote.”
The Washington Post isn’t the only publication weighing in on Biden’s penchant for misleading the public on the Georgia law. The Morning Dispatch, described as an online news organ started in 2019 by anti-Trump conservatives, is also taking Biden to the woodshed.
Recalling how Stacey Abrams—the unsuccessful candidate for governor in Georgia—released a statement alleging the new law is about voter suppression and how Biden joined in the bashing a day later, the Morning Dispatch stated, “The accusation from Biden is a serious one.”
But then the news organ did something surprising. It went back through the history of Georgia voter suppression, and the narrative was not nice to Democrats. It recalled how, in 1907, then-Gov. Michael Hoke Smith, a Democrat, “signed a bill amending the state constitution to create a literacy test for voting—but anyone descended from a Confederate or Union soldier was exempt.”
“A year later,” the report added, “Georgia’s Democratic Party joined other Southern states in establishing a “white primary” that explicitly prohibited black voters from participating. Jim Crow laws were real, and a dark stain on American history.
“But attempts by prominent Democrats—including the president—to tie SB 202 to the Jim Crow era are incredibly disingenuous,” the fact checker explained. “For starters, the bill actually expands voting access for most Georgians, mandating precincts hold at least 17 days of early voting—including two Saturdays, with Sundays optional—leading up to the election. Voting locations during this period must be open for at least eight hours, and can operate between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Several states (including Biden’s home state of Delaware, which will not implement it until 2022) do not currently allow any in-person early voting, and plenty, like New Jersey, offer far fewer than 17 days.”
So, why does Biden continue the disinformation campaign? Could it be because the establishment media, which appears solidly in his camp, has bought into his fable? Only time will tell for sure, but some evidence of how bad it could get came from ESPN’s report that Major League Baseball is pulling its All Star Game out of Atlanta over the voting law.
In a prepared statement, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred announced, “Over the last week, we have engaged in thoughtful conversations with Clubs, former and current players, the Players Association, and The Players Alliance, among others, to listen to their views. I have decided that the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport is by relocating this year’s All-Star Game and MLB Draft.”
