Outrageous: Teacher’s Lesson Slide Compares Trump to Nazism, Communism (Video)

ROUGH TRANSCRIPT:

HOST: “Upset parents are contacting Baltimore ‎County schools about a slide that was ‎shown in their child’s history class ‎this week at Loch Raven High School. ‎They’re questioning whether this was ‎part of a history lesson or if the ‎teacher was spreading political ideology. ‎Shelley Orman has been looking into this. ‎She joins us live from Baltimore County ‎with what’s created all this controversy. ‎Shelly?”

ORMAN: “Mary (ph), the parents we talked with ‎don’t want to be identified because ‎they’re afraid about negative ‎repercussions for their children at ‎school. They talked with us over the ‎phone about what was shown in the ‎classroom.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

[clip starts]

UNKNOWN MALE: “My understanding is yesterday that was just put up and it was left there for everyone to see the whole day.”

ORMAN (voice-over): “This is the image in question ‎taken in a history class at Loch Raven ‎High School Wednesday. It’s circulating ‎among students and parents at the school.”

UNKNOWN MALE: “‎To even imply that our president is in ‎any way a Nazi or communist is ‎outrageous.”

UNKNOWN FEMALE: “I was told that by another student who said the topic in that class was supposedly world leaders shunning other groups out.”

UNKNOWN MALE: “I said, ‘Is this part of the curriculum?’”

ORMAN: “Fox 45 contacted Baltimore ‎County Schools right after we were sent ‎this picture. In a statement they say ‎this slide was used as part of a lesson ‎in an AP History course. The topics being ‎discussed included World Wars and the ‎attempts by some leaders to limit, or ‎prevent migration, into certain countries. ‎In isolation and out of context with the ‎lesson, the image could be misunderstood. ‎In our Advanced Placement (AP) classes, ‎which are college level courses, we ‎expect and encourage analysis and ‎discussion around historical and current ‎events even if they are considered ‎controversial. This lesson was not ‎intended to make a political statement. ‎If a student has concerns when ‎discussing a controversial issue schools ‎have the tools to address the concern ‎and support the student.”

KACH: “Is this ‎curriculum for AP? ‎Is it a purchased curriculum? Is it one ‎that our school system wrote? You know, where ‎is it coming from?”

ORMAN: “Baltimore County ‎Councilman Wade Kach represents ‎District 3 where Loch Raven High School ‎is located.”

KACH: “I just think that it’s ‎irresponsible to post anything like this ‎in a classroom.”

VATZ: “High schools are not ‎supposed to take advocacy positions ‎against presidents. We’re supposed to ‎explain how political advocacy works if ‎that’s what they’re doing, but they’re ‎certainly not to take a position that ‎the president is comparable to these ‎awful leaders of the past.”

ORMAN: “Dr. Richard Vatz teaches political persuasion at ‎Towson University.”

ORMAN: “Is this appropriate ‎for an advanced placement college type ‎level of course?”

VATZ: “Absolutely. If, if the ‎context is acceptable.”

ORMAN: “But Vatz ‎questions the explanation given from ‎County Schools about the context of the ‎image.”

VATZ: “If they’re not presenting that as clear, outrageous argument against the president of the United States, then they’re not doing their job. It’s really contemptible. I mean, I — I — I — but I want to say it’s conceivable that the teachers are doing a better job than has been communicated to you.”

[clip ends]

ORMAN: “We did ‎ask County schools about whether this ‎was part of the curriculum. We were told ‎that the teacher did not create that ‎slide. We are still waiting to hear back ‎from them about where it came from and ‎whether it was part of the curriculum. ‎Reporting live Shelley Orman Fox 45 News.”
