Op-Ed: Time To Send The Big Beautiful Bill To Trump’s Desk

Right now, the United States Senate is debating President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill.” Social media is weighing in as well, with opinions ranging from enthusiastic support to concerns about increased spending.

Personally, I believe much of the controversy surrounding this bill is manufactured by D.C. insiders determined to derail President Trump’s agenda to Make America Great Again.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

This bill delivers the largest tax cut in American history and the most sweeping welfare reform we’ve ever seen. It ends the era of open borders and returns control of our country to the American people. And yes, it reduces the deficit. That’s not political spin; it’s arithmetic.

Some critics claim the bill increases the deficit. That’s nonsense. What they’re doing is repeating a trick cooked up by the Congressional Budget Office—a group of unelected number-crunchers who often seem more focused on protecting big government than telling the truth. They argue that maintaining Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, which have been in place for seven years, somehow costs the government money.

Here in Idaho, we don’t believe your money belongs to Washington first. Only in the twisted logic of the swamp does not raising taxes count as a “cost.” That’s a Democrat talking point, and I’m disappointed to see it echoed on the right.

I’ve also seen complaints that the bill doesn’t include the discretionary spending cuts proposed by DOGE—the Department of Government Efficiency led by Elon Musk and his team of wonder kids. I get it; I want to see those cuts too. But here’s the reality: under Senate rules, reconciliation bills can’t address discretionary spending. That’s just how the process works. The DOGE cuts will come through separate bills—and they should! This bill, meanwhile, slashes more than $1.6 trillion in mandatory spending according to Trump advisor Stephen Miller. This would be a huge win, especially since it includes long-overdue welfare reform.

And let’s talk about the border. For years, D.C. politicians have wrung their hands while illegal immigration overwhelmed our communities. This bill fixes it. No half-measures, no games, just strong, lawful, America-first border enforcement.

In the end, the Big Beautiful Bill delivers what we’ve been fighting for: smaller government, lower taxes, reduced welfare dependency, secure borders, and more freedom. It’s not perfect—and let me tell you, I never saw a perfect bill during my time in the Idaho Legislature—but it’s a game-changer in our efforts to truly Make America Great Again. We’re not going to undo the damage the left has done to our country overnight, but this is a great start.

I stand with President Trump and Idaho’s congressional delegation in pushing this across the finish line. It’s time to send the Big Beautiful Bill to the president’s desk.
