Obama Gave Iran Access to US Banking System – Is That Treason?

Obama had a plan to bypass US sanctions against Iran so they could convert their money with a US bank, even after they told Congress they wouldn’t do that. They gave Iran access to the US banking system, but fortunately the US banks contacted refused to comply.

The Obama administration granted a license letting Iran access the United States financial system despite officials’ pledges that they would prohibit it, according to a draft report from the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.

“On Feb. 24, 2016, the Treasury Department issued a specific license to Bank Muscat to authorize the conversion of Iran’s rials to euros through ‘any United States depository institution …,’” the draft report said. “Even after the specific license was issued, U.S. government officials maintained in congressional testimony that Iran would not be granted access to the U.S. financial system.”

“The Obama administration during the negotiation of the Iran deal misled the American people,” said Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), subcommittee chairman. “I think they did so because they were desperate to get a deal.”

When the nations involved in the Iran nuclear agreement implemented the deal, Iran had $5.7 billion in assets at Bank Muscat in Muscat, Oman, maintained as Omani rials, according to the subcommittee. Iran wanted to access that money, and using the U.S. financial system to convert it “was the most efficient means, even though U.S. sanctions prohibited it,” according to the report.

US Banking system declined to help

Senator Portman was polite (using “misled”) – Obama lied. John Kerry lied. The Obama administration specifically told Congress they would not grant access to the US financial system…but they tried anyway. Fortunately, the US banks declined to launder the Iranian money. That forced Bank Muscat to go to European banks.

Of course, a former member of the Obama administration defends their actions, saying that the license to Bank Muscat did not entail Iranian access to US financial institutions. Sure. Riiight. The fact that the Oman Bank Muscat held $5.7 billion in Iranian funds and the whole plan was to “convert” those funds seems to be lost on the Obama administration.

We’ve already known the Obama administration gave millions in cash to Iran. Iran played the Obama Administration like the proverbial fiddle. And John Kerry’s still doing it- as we previously reported (see below). They made Iran their BFF, which was a foolish thing to do, considering their leaders hate us and our ally, Israel.

“Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.” 18 U.S. Code § 2381 – Treason
