Now that Chipotle is a gun-free zone is it a safer place to eat a burrito?

Chipotle is now a gun-free zone after Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America circulated a petition calling on them to ban guns in their restaurants.

The petition, called “Burritos, Not Bullets: Send Chipotle a Message,” was intended to pressure Chipotle to ban legal gun owners from bringing firearms into their restaurants.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

The petition says, in part:

Gun extremists flooded into a Dallas-area Chipotle this weekend, alarming customers and raising serious questions about public safety throughout the chain restaurant’s 1,600 locations.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America began the petition in response to an armed trip by gun owners in Texas. Forbes.com reports the following:

“A Facebook photo of the gathering cropped up on social media — as did another photo showing two men apparently unrelated to Open Carry Texas inside a Chipotle outlet armed with SKS rifles, semi-automatic weapons of the kind once used by both the Soviet Army and the Viet Cong.”

Moms Demand Action, is a activist group that’s now under the “umbrella of Bloomberg’s $50 million Everytown movement. MDA was formed in response to the murders in Newtown. Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action had the following to say about the “gun extremists” who brought guns into Chipotle:

“We support the Second Amendment but we also need to feel safe and secure in the places we take our children. In states where no background checks or training are required to buy semi-automatic rifles and carry them openly in public, businesses have a duty to protect their employees and patrons.

That’s why we are calling on Chipotle and other businesses to follow Starbucks SBUX-1.11% lead and make a clear statement that firearms are not welcome in their restaurants.”

Watts used an incident in a Chipotle establishment located in Utah where a legal concealed carry owner dropped his firearm that discharged. Watts is using that incident to justify the call for Chipotle to ban firearms in their restaurants.

The founder for Open Carry Texas, C.J. Grisham, informed Forbes the members who entered the Chipotle establishment with firearms wasn’t a demonstration but rather members just eating a meal after an event. Before members enter an establisment they usually send in an unarmed person to get permission to dine there and warn staff and customers armed people are coming into their restaurant. Grisham said:

We don’t go there just to carry guns into a restaurant. We always let the manager know we’re coming. We try very hard to make people feel comfortable. We’re peaceful, we’re looking for a place to eat, but we have guns. If we’re not welcome, we’re not going to spend money there.

After pressure from MDA Chipotle issued a statement Monday afternoon asking gun owners not to bring firearms into their establishments. MDA said, “This is a crucial victory for our movement — not only because we can now feel safer to enjoy a burrito in Chipotle, but because it sends a message to business owners everywhere that the safety of their customers must come first,” according to the Business Insider report.

Is it really true that Chipotle is a safer place to eat a burrito now that it’s another gun-free zone? Lets examine MDA’s claim about gun-free zones being safer places.

Mass shootings are no more common than they have been in past decades, despite the impression given by the media, according to the National Review Online. In actuality gun-free zones tend to give people a false sense of security. ‘

USA Today reports, “Policies making areas “gun free” provide a sense of safety to those who engage in magical thinking, but in practice, of course, killers aren’t stopped by gun-free zones. As always, it’s the honest people — the very ones you want to be armed — who tend to obey the law.”

The real truth of the matter, one that the lamestream media neglects to inform the public about, is from 1993 to 2011 non-fatal gun crime fell 69 percent. In the same period of time people murdered in gun related crimes dropped 39 percent. Violent crime is said to also have fallen. However, only 12 percent of Americans are aware of the above-mentioned facts.

Here’s a news flash for you, gun crime is down and statistics from the Bureau of Justice show that states with liberal concealed carry laws have lower murder rates than states that restrict firearms. Weapons bans are ineffective because it doesn’t keep guns out of the hands of criminals. Instead it penalizes law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves and other members of the community in which they live. An Obama-backed CDC study also confirmed what gun owners already knew, that firearms are an effective and important deterrent to crime.

So basically MDA, the lamestream media and others who say gun-free zones are safer are misleading Americans and lulling them into a false sense of security. This author plans to boycott Chipotle and any other business that squelch our liberties and 2nd Amendment rights.
