No Singapore Summit with North Korea

nuclear missile tests

It’s been obvious that there would be no Singapore summit between President Trump and Kim Jong-Un after Kim began a series of threats against the summit. First it was the US military exercises with South Korea, and then it was something Vice President Pence said, then threats from Kim to call off the meeting created an untenable situation. Ultimately their hostility scrubbed the mission. President Trump called it a “missed opportunity.”

It’s not a surprise. Kim likely felt that his own actions made him look weak… a Communist Dictator simply can’t look weak in front of his people. So to save himself from looking too willing to work with the US, he and his leaders began making threats.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

President Trump responded in the only way he could – by pulling out of the Singapore Summit.

The letter reads in part,

“…We were informed that the meeting  was requested by North Korea, but to us that is  totally irrelevant. Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting. Therefore, please let this letter serve to represent that the Singapore summit, for the good of both parties, but to the detriment of the world, will not take place. You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used…

…I want to thank you for the release of the hostages who are now home with their families. That was a beautiful gesture and very much appreciated.

If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me or write. The world, and North Korea in particular, has lost a great opportunity for lasting peace and great prosperity and wealth. This missed opportunity is truly a sad moment in history.”

The President’s message wasn’t harsh, it was matter-of-fact and solid. He wasn’t rude or angry, just truthful. When Vice President Pence stated that North Korea had asked for the summit, the DPRK flew off the handle at the entire idea. Fox News reported,

“As a person involved in the U.S. affairs, I cannot suppress my surprise at such ignorant and stupid remarks gushing out from the mouth of the U.S. vice president.” North Korean Foreign Ministry, Choe Son Hui

The White House made it clear that their insult to Vice President Pence had nothing to do with the pull-out, but it was referenced in the President’s letter. It was a perceived offense, not a real one. But keep in mind, this kind of thing has been common in dealings with North Korea. While a one on one summit had never been attempted, the history of working with them has been fraught with threats and perceived offenses for decades.
