A New Orleans attack at around 3:15 a.m. in which 10 are dead, with approximately 35 injured, is being investigated as an act of terrorism. The driver of a pickup skirted the barricades set up and intentionally attempted to run over as many people as possible in the French Quarter near Bourbon and Canal streets. At least one IED was also found near that area. The FBI is the lead agency.

The driver of the pickup exited the truck and began shooting, striking two police officers. Both are in stable condition, but the suspect is deceased. The pickup was smashed, and a black flag of some type was wrapped around a staff attached to the pickup – although it is unclear what the flag was, some are saying it was an ISIS flag. The New Orleans attack came as revelers filled the streets.

The pickup reportedly used in this attack was picked up by a license reader coming through Eagle Pass, Texas as it came in from Mexico. It is unknown who was specifically driving, or whether or not the vehicle was stolen. The immigration status of the driver or suspect are also unknown.
The FBI rarely calls something a terrorism incident without certain criteria being met. Their first spokesperson claimed it wasn’t terrorism then the next time the FBI stated it WAS terrorism. There is a possibility that this suspect had accomplices, and authorities are working to mitigate any further issues. We will update this story tomorrow with new information.
