There are many reasons to dislike any and all of the changes to the ATF’s definitions of guns. One of the proposed changes is a tax on a braced pistol, as defined by them. This means that if people own certain firearms, not all of which can actually be considered pistols, then they will have to pay an additional $200.
This will be a burden to people like disabled veterans who keep braced pistols for self-defense. The ruling further shows that the ATF has no love for the Second Amendment, and certainly not for the millions of Americans who own firearms and do not commit crimes.
Congressional Response
There has been a response by 140 members of Congress about this proposed rule. Here is a part of the letter they sent to ATF.

“We are disturbed that a government agency would issue a guidance that would tax and take away the ability of tens of millions of Americans, including disabled veterans, to enjoy constitutionally protected rights. In fact, the ATF seems committed to attacking the constitutionally protected rights of all law-abiding citizens.”
One Explanation
There have been several members of Congress who have explained their stance on this rule. Here is a response by Republican Representative Rob Wittman (VA-1).
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) recently proposed a burdensome tax and regulation on firearms typically used by veterans with disabilities, and millions of other law abiding Americans. This rule would disproportionately affect disabled veterans, who choose these particular firearms because, as the ATF even states, “the brace concept was inspired by the needs of disabled combat veterans who still enjoy recreational shooting but could not reliably control heavy pistols without assistance.” This rule would not only hurt veterans, but it would make millions of law-abiding citizens felons overnight unless they turn in or destroy the firearm, destroy the brace, or pay a $200 tax.
While many — falsely — claim the Democrat Party does not ban firearms while they are in power, they use the time to create as hostile an environment as they possibly can, going so far as to threaten gun owners with nuclear war.
They believe that the state should be seen as the sole protector even as they fail to do so. The major problem is that the GOP has done nothing when they have the power to protect the rights of law-abiding citizens.
Two things need to be done. First, get rid of the Democrats. Second, replace them with Republicans who will actually uphold their oath to protect and defend the Constitution, which includes the Second Amendment.
