Multiple Philadelphia Police Shot, Suspect In Custody After Hours Long Standoff

North Philadelphia — Police were called to serve a narcotics warrant in the Nicetown-Tioga neighborhood at around 4 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, a gunman began firing at them. A massive Philadelphia police presence ensued.

Six Philadelphia Police officers were shot, all non-life-threatening, and two officers were injured in a car crash on the way to the scene, according to CBS. The suspect surrendered at around midnight, according to Fox.

Temple University Health Sciences building was placed on lockdown briefly until police “secured” the area. Two Daycares in the vicinity were evacuated and children taken to a designated area for reuniting with parents.

The suspect barricaded himself inside the building and was still firing his gun(s) hours later. Officials said he was armed with an AR-15 and “several handguns.”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Two officers were trapped inside two separate rooms in the building with several hostages, but were successfully evacuated by SWAT five hours later.

The suspect was live streaming the incident on Facebook at one point. Police requested the public stay away from the area for the hours long standoff.

Four women who were trapped inside when the shooting began were rescued by police.

“I thank God for these cops. They’re good people. Don’t say nothing bad about them, they kept us safe the whole time,” one of them stated.

The suspect ultimately surrendered at around midnight in a cloud of tear gas and was arrested without further incident. Hostage negotiators, the suspect’s attorney, all had attempted to get him to stop firing to no avail.

He was identified as Maurice Hill, 36, who has an extensive record of firearms convictions and evading arrest.

Aftermath

The issue here for Mayor Jim Kenney is that the suspect “had all that firepower” and “this has to stop.” The suspect is a convicted felon, and should not have had guns in the first place. Where did ANY gun control help this situation? Criminals can get guns anywhere. They don’t just waltz into a gun store and buy them. Record checks are worthless. Red flag laws don’t apply here. Gun bans would do nothing, since the black market has millions of them.

Taking guns away from good people will not take guns away from bad people.
