Monterey County, California – On Monday, an incident occurred at Monterey County Middle School in Castroville, in which a 12 year old suspect stabbed a 12 year old classmate in the chest, and held other students and an adult at bay with a kitchen knife. The incident was recorded on a Snapchat video.
The adult in the video appears remarkably calm as she attempts to talk to the student with the knife. The incident took place at around 8:30 a.m. on Monday.
Blue Lives Matter reported,
Several students began recording the incident with their cell phones. In one video, the knife-wielding attacker was seen pointing his knife towards an adult female, who appeared to be a school employee.
Her motions remained calm and steady throughout the brief video, and she appeared to be talking to the suspect.
The boy was ultimately tackled and subdued by another school employee, and then was taken into custody by police, KSBW reported.
The school went into lockdown for approximately one hour, while a medical helicopter responded to take the victim to a San Jose trauma center, KGTV reported.
According to Commander Banuelos, the boy’s injuries were life-threatening.
As of Monday afternoon, the victim’s condition was upgraded to stable. The motive for the stabbing has not been released and remains unclear.
Although most accounts say that in the video students are running for cover, it appears from watching it that some of the students are watching it and some are walking away. They don’t seem to be overly freaked out by the incident.
The attacker faces an attempted an attempted murder charge. His name has not been released.
The gun? The knife? Or the person?
It’s a question of what weapon is being used by a person who has decided to hurt others. In 2014, a 16 year old Pennsylvania teenager went on a stabbing rampage with two knives at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville. He stabbed 22 people- 21 students and a security guard, before another security guard and the principal were able to tackle and disarm him.
The perpetrator in that incident was said to have a “blank expression on his face” as he stabbed and slashed at students. Alex Hribal was charged with 4 counts of attempted murder and 21 counts of aggravated assault. Some of the victims required numerous surgeries due to the damage to their internal organs.
So let’s ask again? Is it the weapon or the person holding the weapon?
