Vance Luther Boelter has been identified as the suspect in the targeted assassination of Minnesota legislator Melissa Hortman and her husband at around 2 am on Saturday. Also shot were Senator John Hoffman and his wife, who were seriously injured, but are expected to recover. From the reports in the media, the suspect allegedly had a police vehicle (or one similar) with lights, a fake uniform, a tactical vest, and all of the accessories that law enforcement carries on their belt.
The suspect reportedly went to the Hoffman residence first and shot both him and his wife. Then the suspect went to Melissa Hortman’s house not far away. He murdered both Melissa Hortman and her husband and was exiting the house as real police officers showed up. When confronted, he exchanged gunfire with the real officers but was able to escape.
A manhunt has ensued, with a sense of urgency since officers found a manifesto with a “hit list” of other lawmakers on the front seat.
Boelter was appointed to Governor Tim Walz’s Workforce Development Board in 2019 and in 2016 by former Governor Mark Dayton. He is also the CEO of an African Migrant NGO.

According to records, Melissa Hortman voted against the Democrat party on a bill that allowed illegal immigrants to receive freed healthcare. She faced serious pushback for her vote.
