MI Republican candidate suggests armed monitoring of ballot counting

Carrying guns at ballot counting sites in Michigan could get people in trouble.

A Republican candidate for the Michigan state Senate is under fire from Democrats for having suggested during a political rally last weekend that “people should ‘show up armed’ to protect Republican election observers’ access to monitor the counting of ballots,” according to the Detroit News.

GOP candidate Mike Detmer could be in a bit of trouble, the newspaper indicated, because Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson reportedly referred his comments to Attorney General Dana Nessel. It is a crime to intimidate people by brandishing a firearm at a polling place, the story noted.

The incident with Detmer was captured on video. It was during a Q&A session with Detmer and another candidate. Someone asked about an apparent problem at a ballot counting center following the 2020 presidential election, alleging Republican observers had been “pushed” out.

Detmer’s reaction: “Are you armed?”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

He quickly noted the best resolution of a problem is to do it peacefully, but then he reportedly added, “But the American people, at some point in time, if we can’t change the tide, which I believe we can, we need to be prepared to lock and load.”

Nessel said intimidating people with a firearm would “result in arrest and prosecution.”

Out in Washington State, Democrats are trying to prohibit open carry at such places, and at public meetings or other gatherings. Many activist gun owners are furious, because they believe this is a backdoor attempt to erode the state’s 35-year-old preemption law.

Meanwhile, CNN’s Jim Acosta is back in the spotlight for concurring with a guest that the unwillingness of Republicans to support gun control is tantamount to “mass human sacrifice.” The conversation was with author Kurt Anderson, focusing on his new book about conservative opposition to vaccines.

But the conversation strayed into the gun control arena.

Republicans have, for years now, been doing a different kind of what is effectively mass human sacrifice in terms of gun deaths and eliminating all gun regulation,” Anderson said.
