In an interview with Bill O’Reilly on Tuesday, President Trump expressed that he plans to designate Mexican cartels as foreign terror organizations. (Daily Wire). Mexico immediately asked for a meeting with the Trump administration. They are not happy with the idea.
The Mexican government stated in part,
“The Foreign Secretary will establish contact with his counterpart, Michael R. Pompeo, in order to discuss this very important issue for the bilateral agenda. Under the good relations that exist between the two countries, the Government of Mexico will seek to have a high-level meeting as soon as possible to present Mexico’s position and learn the views of the United States authorities. As in other issues on the bilateral agenda, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will promote dialogue and a roadmap that allows us to move forward to reduce the flow of weapons and money to organized crime from the United States to Mexico, as well as chemical and drug precursors that cross our territory to the north country.”
The deaths from Mexican cartels have been staggering. Killing and kidnapping people outright is only one aspect. Killing hundreds of thousands by way of the drugs coming into America another. Just the other day, the Coast Guard intercepted a “cocaine sub” carrying $69 Million in cocaine – and that’s a relatively small haul compared to some of the hauls on other subs interdicted.
“I don’t want to say what I am going to do, but they will be designated. I’ve already offered Mexico … to let us go in and clean it out and he so far has rejected the offer but at some point something has to be done. Look, we are losing 100,000 people a year to what is happening and what is coming through on Mexico.” President Trump
Bill O’Reilly asked, “Are you going to designate those cartels in Mexico as terror groups and start hitting them with drones and things like that?…So you are going to designate the Mexican cartels as terror groups?”
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Trump responded, “Yeah, I will be. I have been working on that for the last 90 days. You know, designation is not that easy, you have to go through a process, and we are well into that process.”
O’Reilly stated, “And wait to see, they’ll attack you for doing that.”
Trump said, “I don’t care. I’m attacked on everything.”
And THAT statement is why President Donald J Trump is the absolute best man for the job. He doesn’t care what people think, or how many people attack him. He does what needs to be done.
The designation of an FTO, or Foreign Terror Organization has several requirements, according to the Congressional Research Service:
- be a foreign organization,
- engage in or retain the capability and intent to engage in terrorism, and
- threaten the security of U.S. nationals or the national defense, foreign relations, or the economic interests of the United States.
The administration should have no trouble with the criteria, since the DEA stated that the Mexican cartels “remain the greatest criminal drug threat to the United States; no other group is currently positioned to challenge them. The Sinaloa Cartel maintains the most expansive footprint in the United States, while Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion’s (CJNG) domestic presence has significantly expanded in the past few years.”
