Mayor Withdraws Refugee Resolution After Outcry

The Mayor of a small North Idaho town withdrew his resolution to bring in refugees after the townspeople raised an outcry against it. We previously reported the initial council meeting that was standing room only. Wednesday’s meeting was the same.
Faced with fierce opposition from the people of Sandpoint, Idaho AND their Sheriff, Daryl Wheeler, Mayor Shelby Rognstad backed off of his resolution and withdrew it at last night’s Council meeting.

The people’s voice was heard
The line to get into the Council Chambers on Wednesday was once again long, but no public comments were allowed at the meeting.  The Mayor admitted that the resolution only created more division in the community, so he withdrew it. He also mentioned that he might now be the focus of a recall drive in the city, though as far as we know, nothing official has been started.
His plan was so out of touch with the flavor of the community and North Idaho in general it’s a wonder he was ever elected in the first place. The Governor of Idaho, Butch Otter, backed down on Syrian resettlement after hundreds of letters crossed his desk and protests erupted in Boise. The Bonner County Commissioners came out against the idea, as did Sheriff Wheeler.
After the shooting in San Bernardino and the Paris attacks, that anyone could want Syrian resettlement is beyond comprehension. If even Europe couldn’t properly “vet” the refugees, then how would America do it? Progressives talk about “tolerance” and saving the refugees, but they never talk about protecting Americans.
Previous meeting
According to some blogs on the subject, the previous meeting had controversy over how many people were allowed into the chamber. Some folks complained that  the police locked out the overflow of people who attended that meeting (due to the legal capacity of the room, no doubt). They became angry and there were some minor confrontations with police.
When they were eventually let in to the meeting, calm once again descended. When the resolution was tabled at that first meeting, everyone was happy. They were much happier when the resolution was withdrawn last night.
