‘Mandatory buyback’ of firearms is ‘compensated confiscation,’ say 2A activists

When Vice Presidential hopeful Sen. Kamala Harris was on the campaign trail for the Democratic presidential nomination, she asserted during an event called the “2020 Gun Safety Forum” that the United States should create a mandatory “buyback” of so-called “assault weapons,” the Western Journal recalled.

The contention is coming back to haunt the California Democrat, because gun rights activists are now challenging the notion that the government could “buy back” millions of guns because the government never owned those firearms in the first place.

More importantly, a “mandatory buyback” translates literally to compensated confiscation. That is, you must turn in your guns, and then the government sends you a check. There was nothing in the proposal to suggest keeping one’s firearms would be an option.

Harris, who had significant differences with presumed presidential nominee Joe Biden during the primary campaign, has now warmed up to the former vice president. They made an initial appearance in Delaware Wednesday evening, and will now hit the campaign trail in earnest, provided Biden gets out of his basement to do so.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Gun “buybacks” are nothing new for liberal politicians. They’ve been doing this sort of thing in various cities around the country for a couple of decades. Even some gun control groups acknowledge such efforts are all flash and no substance because they don’t show any effectiveness in reducing gun-related violence.

Typically, guns turned in at such events are often clunkers. Criminals do not surrender perfectly workable firearms.

One such event in Seattle more than a decade ago saw gun rights activists standing on the street offering cash for guns before their owners turned them in at a drop-off in a parking lot under Interstate 5. It was something of a circus atmosphere, and perfectly legal prior to the adoption of a so-called “universal background check” law. The same thing happened in other cities, until gun buybacks became unworkable or the sponsors didn’t care to look foolish on television.

Although the media is now trying to portray Harris as a “moderate,” her track record is far left and that includes her support of gun control or prohibition. The proposed mandatory “buyback” would be a key ingredient of such a scheme, and those who balk could face penalties.

The gun prohibition lobby is already touting the Biden-Harris team as the strongest “gun safety” presidential ticket in history. This translates to very bad news for American gun owners, who now must shake off traditional lethargy and turn out at the polls this fall.
