Majority supports parents’ right to challenge school boards

A Rasmussen survey shows a majority of likely U.S. voters support the right of parents to confront local school boards.

Amid the controversy over reports that the Justice Department is investigating alleged threats against school board members, a new Rasmussen survey reveals a whopping 88 percent of likely voters, “believe it is Very Important for parents to be involved in their children’s education. Another 10% say parental involvement is Somewhat Important.”

Attorney General Merrick Garland ignited the debate earlier this week when, according to Newsmax, he “directed federal authorities to hold strategy sessions in the next 30 days with law enforcement to address the increasing threats targeting school board members, teachers and other employees in the nation’s public schools.”

Parents involved in such protests are also taxpayers. Their property taxes, via levy and bond issues, support local school districts, even if they are renting.

The controversy has taken on a life of its own. Fox News is reporting on a Virginia woman who immigrated to the U.S. from Communist China and is now a mother. She is now cautioning about cutting off discussions over school curriculum, specifically the opposition to so-called “critical race theory.”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Xi Van Fleet told Fox News, “When I was in China, I spent my entire school years in the Chinese Cultural Revolution, so I’m very, very familiar with the communist tactics of how to divide people, how they canceled the Chinese traditional culture and destroyed our heritage.”

Van Fleet predicted the effort will backfire.

Newsmax said Garland sent a memorandum asserting there has been “a disturbing spike in harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence against school administrators, board members, teachers, and staff who participate in the vital work of running our nation’s public schools.”

According to the Rasmussen survey, 44 percent of likely voters support an FBI investigation, but 47 percent are opposed, including 39 percent who are strongly opposed.

One case in Virginia has because a national cause. According to Fox News, the parent of a female student who was allegedly sexually assaulted in school earlier this year was arrested during a school board meeting in June after he “accused the district of trying to cover up” the alleged attack.
