On Tuesday, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow broadcast the 1040 from Pres. Donald Trump’s 2005 tax returns after teasing the Internet that she had something of a bombshell. But, The Hill said, the White House released the information and slammed the network in the process.
According to The Hill:
The White House on Tuesday night released some details of President Trump’s income and paid taxes from 2005, as MSNBC prepared to release the information in an evening broadcast.
Trump reported $150 million in income and $38 million paid in taxes, according to a statement from the White House.
MSNBC host Rachel Maddow had teased Tuesday evening that she had Trump’s 1040 form from 2005. MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell tweeted, “This is the night we’ve been waiting for.”
MSNBC alerted the White House about the information, and the White House seemed to opt to take the punch out of the report, releasing the major numbers itself shortly before the broadcast — and slamming MSNBC in the process.
“You know you are desperate for rating when you are willing to violate the law to push a story about two pages of tax returns from over a decade ago,” the White House said in a statement. “Despite this substantial income figure and tax paid, it is totally illegal to steal and publish tax returns. The dishonest media can continue to make this part of their agenda, while the President will focus on his, which includes tax reform that will benefit all Americans.”

Maddow’s fail didn’t go unnoticed on Twitter.
It took over 30 years for someone to top @GeraldoRivera for biggest over-hyped live TV epic fail in history. You did it Rachel Maddow !

One person noted that Trump actually paid more in taxes than “crazy” socialist Bernie Sanders:

Thanks Rachel Maddow for commitin' a felony for this info. Merica.

1. Rachel Maddow made a fool of herself.
2. I couldn't care less about Trump's tax returns.

How bad was her fail?
Not even a half-hour into the broadcast, and Hillary Clinton’s former press secretary was already advising Democrats to drop the whole thing and pivot back to telling the American public that the Obamacare replacement will result in millions of people losing insurance by no longer being forced to buy it.
Dems should return focus to Trumpcare tomorrow & the millions it will leave uninsured, not get distracted by two pages from '05 tax return

It looks like people forgot for a minute just how boring tax returns and Maddow can be. After a windup that had many experiencing flashbacks to Geraldo Rivera stalling while workers drilled into Al Capone’s empty vault, viewers were left wondering if Trump hadn’t leaked the tax return himself, seeing as he came across looking pretty good.

Even CNN’s Van Jones made fun of Maddow:
