LVMPD – Turn in Your Unwanted Gun, Get Gift Card

The LVMPD in North Las Vegas advertised an event on June 29 that exchanged gift cards for guns according to news3lv. Held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the First AME church and sponsored by the group “Iron Sharpens Iron Mentoring,” the event was designed to reduce the amount of guns on the street.

The event organizers requested that guns be unloaded, placed in a plastic bag, and left in the car, so that a police officer could get them. They could get $50 for an old weapon that was in bad shape, $100 for ‘good quality’ handguns or rifles, and $200 for “assault weapons.” (Whatever their definition of an assault weapon is- that was totally unclear, although we’re pretty sure they meant ARs).

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Here are some of the problems:

Rarely do street thugs use rifles. Mostly they use handguns. If they’re asking law-abiding citizens to turn in their “high quality” handguns, rifles and shotguns, they’re barking up the wrong tree. Ordinary citizens can get much more money at a gun shop or even a pawn shop for “high quality” weapons.

Flawed reasoning says that street people who turn in their guns will use the gift card to go buy groceries or a seat cover for their thugmobile…likely they’ll use it to buy something useful. Like another gun perhaps. A newer model, even. The local black market probably has a lot to choose from. Though most street vendors don’t take gift cards, fast talkers can get anything to work.

The belief among many is that gun buybacks “get guns off the street.” It actually does nothing to stem “gun violence.” It might feed a drug habit for a day or two, however.

Some of the comments beneath the LVMPD post were priceless:

“Great way for a murderer to “anonymously” have a weapon used in a crime disposed of for free. I suppose they could just throw it in a lake though.” Craig

If you have a gun that you don’t want anymore, you can sell it to your local gun shop.

They will probably give you more money than the LVMPD will.
And as federally licensed firearms dealers, your local gun store cannot sell those guns to anyone without first submitting them for an FBI background check.

Don’t let your local police give you $100 for a gun that could net you $400-$500 at your local gun shop.” Jay

“aha! Are these people serious??? Them prices are insulting! How about you leaders sell me your personal vehicles for 500! 2000 for corvettes! ??? fools.” Jim

We were unable to locate the results of the gun turn in program as yet.
