Louisiana fatal defensive shooting report ignites Northwest debate

Even hunting rifles like this one can be used as defensive tools in an emergency.

A report about a 12-year-old Louisiana boy who defended his mother by fatally shooting an armed home invader has ignited a verbal battle on Facebook between viewers of KIRO Eyewitness News, either in support of the youngster or otherwise.

The discussion, which has already garnered some 250 comments, suggests some critics of what the youth did have no understanding of self-defense.

According to The Advocate, the unidentified boy killed a man identified as 32-year-old Brad LeBlanc of Vidalia. He was reportedly armed with a handgun when he “encountered a woman outside her home early Wednesday.” The suspect allegedly forced the woman into her house and a struggle broke out. The boy apparently got a hunting rifle and shot LeBlanc at close range. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

While the East Feliciana Sheriff’s office reportedly “has no evidence that would incriminate the 12-year-old,” The Advocate said, Sheriff Jeffrey Travis said “We have no plans to bring charges…against the child.”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

While that seems like a clear defensive use of a firearm, some KIRO viewers have other ideas that gun owners reacting to the story find appalling. KIRO is the CBS affiliate in Seattle, Wash., more than a thousand miles away, but its Facebook page lit up.

One woman chastised a man for supporting the Second Amendment, declaring, “You’re cheering that a child murdered someone? My lord what’s wrong with you?” The remark elicited several replies, all negative and some critical of the woman’s reading skills.

Another woman acknowledged the use of a hunting rifle, but then added, “we must get rid of the dangerous ones.”

While the type and caliber of rifle used in the incident is not mentioned, one person stated, “no one who isn’t an active duty military person currently has any legitimate reason to posses (sic) an AR15.”

Other respondents are very supportive of what the youngster did, with many observing that without the Second Amendment protecting the right to keep and bear arms, the youth and his mother might be the ones who were killed. Others commended the boy while also suggesting he might need counseling for having taken a man’s life.

According to KIRO and The Advocate, Louisiana lawmen had apprehended two other suspects, a man and woman. The man was charged with second-degree murder and being a principal to aggravated burglary and aggravated kidnapping. The woman was being held as an accessory after the fact.
