Kyrsten Sinema was once a Democrat Senator from Arizona. She is now re-registered as an Independent in a remarkable leap away from the Democrat party. She has not gone to the Republican party either. Going independent may eventually snag the seat for Republicans.
“In catering to the fringes, neither party has demonstrated much tolerance for diversity of thought. Bipartisan compromise is seen as a rarely acceptable last resort, rather than the best way to achieve lasting progress. Payback against the opposition party has replaced thoughtful legislating.” Kyrsten Sinema (AZ Central)

Sinema joined with Senator Joe Manchin to block the Dems attempt to stop the filibuster, and in so doing incurred the ire of the Democrat party. She may, as some other independents has done, caucus with Democrats regardless of her move, but she says she will not. She was also censured by the Dems after voting against them over a “voting rights” bill.
“Most Arizonans believe this is a false choice, and when I ran for the U.S. House and the Senate, I promised Arizonans something different. I pledged to be independent and work with anyone to achieve lasting results. I committed I would not demonize people I disagreed with, engage in name-calling, or get distracted by political drama.” Kyrsten Sinema on YouTube
Her decision appears to have thrown a major crimp in the Democrat agenda.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Sinema’s announcement Friday that she will become an independent prompted fury and told-you-so reactions from her Democratic critics, who vowed to fight to win back the seat in 2024. Sinema’s office said she will continue to not attend meetings of the Democratic caucus but intends to keep her committee seats assigned to her by Democrats, preserving the 51-49 Senate balance.
While Sinema won’t yet say whether she will run for re-election as an independent, the prospect shakes up the dynamics of the race. If she runs, it could mean a three-way battle between a Republican, a Democrat and Sinema as an independent. And if Sinema — who despite being a regular headache for her party leaders remains ideologically closer to Democrats than the GOP — pulls more votes from Democratic-leaning voters, that could pave the way for a Republican candidate to win in 2024. Some Democrats claimed that she was ” deliberately” making it hard for Dems to hold the seat. Breaks our hearts, right?
