Islamic Heritage Month in Canada: School Principal Emailed Image of ISIS Flag

A principal in Toronto, Canada sent out an image of an ISIS flag to support “Islamic Heritage month,” which is October in Canada. Then she “apologized.” She must have been living under a rock since 2013, because the ISIS flag is a well-known image that has been splattered over news media for years. The Parkdale community was shocked. The incident was published in January, 2023.

For Canadians, and millions the world over, the infamous black and white flag flown by ISIS is a symbol of terrorism, death and persecution.

When an image of that very flag was sent in an email to parents in October by the principal of a downtown Toronto elementary school, it left some like May Woo “shocked” and “in disbelief.”

In a message meant to celebrate the beginning of Somali Heritage Month and Islamic Heritage Month, principal Darlene Jones copied and pasted an image of the ISIS flag in an email to approximately 700 families whose children attend her school in Toronto’s Parkdale community…

In a follow-up email in October, Jones wrote to families, “I would like to apologize to all who were harmed by the image I sent last week to celebrate Islamic Heritage Month. The image was offensive and harmful and does not represent Islam.”

However, she gave no explanation as to why she sent out the image. CTV

Ms. Jones reportedly has a pattern of disturbing behavior: confusing students with teachers, and substitutes with regular staff. It came to a point that some of the actual Muslims in her school don’t feel safe sending their children to the school. Her pattern of weirdness didn’t stop there when she referred to a local election as a federal one and included the wrong date for families to come and vote in a reminder of the school being a polling place. Was the ISIS flag a political statement of some sort or a product of not paying attention?

Jones was chosen as principal after a previous principal published a “racist” letter targeting Black staffers at the school. Jones herself is Black and had never been a principal before appointment to the position.  The Dr. Rita Cox – Kina Minogok Public School (previously known as Queen Victoria Elementary), reportedly has numerous students who have been through emotional issues – the ISIS flag didn’t make that problem any better. The school is multicultural, which makes being in administration difficult- but requires attention to details. Jones has denied she mistook students for teachers and other mistakes but did apologize for the flag incident. The ISIS flag is one action that sent shockwaves through the community.  Was it an inadvertent mistake as she claims or are there other problems that haven’t yet been revealed?

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

“Why are we even in a position where we have a principal who needs to apologize for something like this? What is the environment that our kids are supposed to be educated and nurtured in?” May Woo, parent of a student
