Ironic: Former FBI Official McGonigal Arrested for Colluding with Russian Oligarch

Can't make this stuff up

Charles McGonigal, 54, former special agent in charge of counterintelligence in the FBI’s New York Field Office, was arrested Saturday afternoon over his ties to a Russian Oligarch named Oleg Derispaska. McGonigal was charged with a five count indictment included lying to FBI agents, money laundering and attempting to evade US sanctions. The Ironic part? He was one of the former FBI officials who “investigated” Russiagate. The cohort, a court interpreter also charged was Sergey Shestakov.  (Justice Dept)

“The FBI is committed to the enforcement of economic sanctions designed to protect the United States and our allies, especially against hostile activities of a foreign government and its actors,” FBI Assistant Director in Charge Michael Driscoll said in a statement. “Russian oligarchs like Oleg Deripaska perform global malign influence on behalf of the Kremlin and are associated with acts of bribery, extortion, and violence.”

Driscoll continued, “As alleged, Mr. McGonigal and Mr. Shestakov, both U.S. citizens, acted on behalf of Deripaska and fraudulently used a U.S. entity to obscure their activity in violation of U.S. sanctions. After sanctions are imposed, they must be enforced equally against all U.S. citizens in order to be successful. There are no exceptions for anyone, including a former FBI official like Mr. McGonigal.” ABCNews

The US Attorneys’ Office for Manhattan released the indictment on Monday, January 23. But the revelation of these charges shows the level of corruption within the FBI. All over money.

As alleged, Charles McGonigal, a former high-level FBI official, and Sergey Shestakov, a Court interpreter, violated U.S. sanctions by agreeing to provide services to Oleg Deripaska, a sanctioned Russian oligarch.  They both previously worked with Deripaska to attempt to have his sanctions removed, and, as public servants, they should have known better.  This Office will continue to prosecute those who violate U.S. sanctions enacted in response to Russian belligerence in Ukraine in order to line their own pockets. The two men allegedly conspired to investigate a rival oligarch and took payments from Deripaska in order to do so in 2021.  Deripaska was sanctioned in 2018 by the Treasury Department as a Specially Designated National (SDN). But these charges are but a drop in the bucket for which McGonigal should be charged. McGonigal was a player in Russiagate, and had been involved in “investigating” Russian counterintelligence for a number of years. After his retirement in 2018, he actually began working for the Russians. Ironic? Corrupt?

Routine corruption

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

In 2015, McGonigal was CC’d on a briefing given by the FBI to the Clinton campaign warning that the Bureau had information that a foreign government was “attempting to influence Hillary Clinton through lobbying and campaign contributions”. Rather than investigating potential criminal activity and national security violations by the Clintons, the FBI instead gave them a ‘heads up’ that there was suspicious behavior taking place.

McGonigal had been working on Russian counterintelligence matters since at least the 90s. He had close ties to former FBI Director James Comey. When Trump fired Comey, McGonigal, speaking in an official capacity, called him “one of the most loved leaders that we’ve had” and stated that “many of us who were nominated for leadership positions by him will forever hold him in esteem as we progress through our FBI careers.”

… The grand hypocrisy of Russiagate was that this corrupt political class used its Russian and international connections to smear Trump with their own crimes. Trump wasn’t working for Moscow, but sometimes it seems as if it’s hard to find anyone in Washington D.C. who isn’t.” Daniel Greenfield, FrontPageMag

The corruption of the FBI, the corruption in Washington DC, are unprecedented in American history. Over the centuries there have been conspiracies, and corrupt officials, but it seems as though in today’s America, the weaponization of the federal government has reached new levels that have turned on ordinary people in order to keep power in the hands of the elites. We the people are the only ones who can stop it.  Will we?
