Believing Iraqi Cleric Muqtada al-Sadr or any other pro-Iranian leader is not necessarily a good idea. According to the Military Times, he told his pro-Iran armed followers that the “crisis is over.” Are the pro-Iranian forces attempting to de-escalate the tensions between the US and Iran? Did the implementation of new sanctions make them think twice, or did the threat of being taken out by a drone strike make a difference?
In President Trump’s address to the nation recently, he stated that Iran “appears to be standing down.” Are they? US officials are beginning to believe that Iran deliberately missed the areas at the military bases that were primarily populated by US forces on Tuesday.
Iraqi Cleric Muqtada al-Sadr
The Military Times reported,
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
“Muqtada al-Sadr, whose Mahdi army led a resistance against American troops following the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, also called for restraint and patience, according to a message posted to Twitter.
In the message, Sadr called for Iraqi factions to not start military action and he asked militias to restrain extremist voices within the various groups.
He also asked for Iraq to form a government within 15 days.
Moreover, an Iran-backed militia group [Kata’ib Hezbollah] believed to be responsible for a series of rocket strikes against coalition forces — which nearly sparked war between Iran and the U.S. — is calling for patience from its followers, according to a message posted by the group.”
Whether any of those conditions will occur is problematic. Just prior to the President’s statement, at least three messages were received through “back channels” in Switzerland from Iran to say that they were done and there would be no further actions. (Daily Wire).
The bully got a bloody nose
The Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in a statement that its diplomatic channel has been used multiple times prior to the incident Tuesday to exchange messages between the U.S. and Iran and urged “maximum restraint” from both sides…
…Along with reportedly communicating through back channels that it sought to de-escalate, Iran’s foreign minister issued a public statement Tuesday night indicating that the strikes would be the only military actions the regime undertook for the killing of General Qassem Soleimani, head of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization. With Ayatollah Khamenei in charge of Iran, anything is possible, including lies to deflect US attacks. But will this latest round of actions bring Iran back to the negotiating table? Are they just exercising patience?
