Cayleigh Hinton, 5, needed a date for a dance. But it wasn’t just any dance, it was a Father-Daughter Dance at Our Lady of Humility School in north suburban Beach Park in Illinois. And her father, Sgt Terrence Hinton had been killed in a training accident in Hawaii back in May of 2017. When her mother requested a National Guard soldier to take Cayleigh to the dance, Illinois soldier First Sergeant Joseph Bierbrodt, stepped up to the plate.
Not many little girls get the kind of escort to that Daddy dance that Cayleigh received. They were escorted to the dance venue by the Patriot Guard, police, and firefighters. The procession of police cars, firetruck, and Patriot Guard was quite a sight, which you can see in the video below. And Cayleigh was in the black limo… yes, a 5 year old got to ride in a limo with First Sgt Bierbrodt, who had never met her before.
We have a feeling she’ll be talking about this for years to come.
Cayleigh had been practicing her dance moves, even telling everyone, “I’m very good at it.” Sgt Bierbrodt said he wasn’t a good dancer himself, but with her feet on his, they twirled and danced together across the floor. Cayleigh told ABC7 that it was a “very special day.”

Sgt Bierbodt says for him, it wasn’t even a question whether he’d do it. It just “had to be done.” He viewed it as an “honor” to take her. He has taken his own children to those kind of dances before, so it wasn’t a new thing for him.
Cayleigh’s mother Jillian told ABC7 that her husband was with their daughter in spirit for the event.
“He’s definitely here in spirit. I heard Cayleigh talking to him while she was getting ready, and I have no doubt she has him with her tonight.” Jillian Hinton
Daddy’s never really leave their loved ones. We carry them in our hearts forever.
