Mingdong Chen, an illegal alien, pleaded guilty to five murders on Wednesday and was sentenced to life in prison. He is not eligible for parole until 2140.
Chen, who was jealous of his cousin’s success, took a meat cleaver to his cousin’s wife and their four children, ages 9, 7, 5 and eighteen months. It was a particularly brutal murder and one of the worst in the history of Brooklyn — and that’s saying something.

Li Zhou called her mother in law in October of 2013 and told her that Chen was in the house and threatening her and the family. The mother in law, who lives in China, called relatives living in New York, who rushed to the house, but it was too late. All five were dead and Chen was covered in blood. Chen was arrested and charged in the murders and has been held without bail.
Chen stabbed and slashed the victims multiple times. The baby was so badly cut that he was decapitated. The father was working at his job in a local restaurant at the time of the attack.
Prosecutors agreed to the plea deal because they wanted to spare the husband from having to hear very graphic details of his family’s murder and because it would guaranty that Chen would never be free again. The case had already been ongoing for two years and with a trial and appeals, it could have been even more years before the case would be final.
In 2014, a judge in Brooklyn ruled that Chen was competent to stand trial but in 2015, State Supreme Court Judge Vincent Del Giudice, ruled that Chen was lucid and aware of his situation and agreed to the plea deal between prosecutors and Chen with the caveat that Chen must spend the rest of his life behind bars.
