Igor Danchenko Arrested in Steele Dossier Probe: Lying to FBI

John Durham has made another charge, this time against the Russian national who allegedly worked with Christopher Steele to create the debunked dossier on President Trump. Igor Danchenko has been charged with lying to the FBI on five different occasions from March 2017 to November 2017. Danchenko was arrested on Thursday morning and will appear Thursday in federal court.

Igor Danchenko is a Russian national living in Virginia. The 39 page indictment by a Federal Grand Jury details the saga of how the FBI relied on Danchenko’s information in order to obtain the FISA warrants for wiretapping the Trump campaign. The indictment clearly mentions that the dossier itself was compiled at the behest of the Clinton campaign.

In one instance, federal prosecutors said Danchenko falsely stated that he never communicated with an unidentified U.S. resident, who was an executive at a public relations firm, about allegations in the dossier. But the Justice Department alleged Danchenko sourced at least one accusation anonymously to the executive, described as a “long-time participant in Democratic Party politics” who was chairman of a national Democratic political organization, state chairman of former President Bill Clinton’s 1992 and 1996 presidential campaigns, and an adviser to Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign…

The dossier was a collection of opposition research notes that contained unproven claims about Mr. Trump and his 2016 campaign, some of which have since been shown to be false. The document came under scrutiny after some of the accusations contained in it were cited by FBI investigators in an application to secure a warrant to surveil Page in October 2016 and then in three subsequent surveillance renewals.

Danchenko claimed that Steele told him to find “compromising materials” on Trump (i.e. opposition research). Even on the Russian’s trips to Moscow, there was no evidence of any salacious activity on Trump’s part. It all appears to have been fabricated. All five counts are in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 1001(a)(2). This makes the third person charged from John Durham’s investigation into the origins of the Russian hoax against Trump. Former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith, who pleaded guilty to making a false statement, and former Perkins Coie attorney Michael Sussman, for making a false statement. The indictments thus far have failed to net the real liars behind the scheme in the first place. Is he building up to the big fish, or is this all we can ever expect?
