Hurricane Dorian

Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas as a Category 5, and hovered around Freeport, moving only at around 1 mph as of Monday morning. But even though slow in progress, Dorian is headed inevitably toward the East Coast to impact the US from Florida north to Virginia.

The hurricane slammed into Abaco in the Bahamas with sustained winds of 185 mph, and gusts up to 200 mph. It slowed down when it reached Grand Bahama island, where it has remained at a crawl over Freeport.

According to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center, the Bahamas are experiencing wind gusts at up to 200 miles per hour and tides have surged 18 to 23 feet above normal levels.

Residents are advised to stay sheltered, as the storm moves very slowly along its path — currently moving at about 1 mile per hour — concentrating the devastation over Grand Bahama Island.

The Guardian

One report stated that at least 13,000 homes are destroyed by the storm. An 8 year old boy named Lachino McIntosh is the first reported death from Hurricane Dorian. His sister is missing. As of this writing, the waters in Freeport are still rising.

“This is probably the most sad and worst day of my life to address the Bahamian people. I just want to say as a physician I’ve been trained to withstand many things, but never anything like this.” Hubert Minnis, PM of the Bahamas

As the hurricane creeps toward the United States, Florida is beginning to feel the outer bands from the storm. Dorian is now a Category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds at 155 mph.

Godspeed, people, Hurricane Dorian is nothing to sneeze at. Relief efforts for the Bahamas are being prepared by numerous groups, as soon as the airports open. As far as the US goes…everyone is waiting for landfall.
