HB 272 – Alabama Now the 22nd State to Adopt Constitutional Carry

Alabama is now the 22nd state to adopt constitutional carry, as Governor Kay Ivey signed HB 272 into law on March 10. It was a bitter fight to get it through the Alabama legislature, with the Director of the Alabama Sheriffs Association actively standing with anti-gunners against the bill. He lost, the citizens won.

The constant narrative that constitutional, or permitless carry will increase crime is not borne out by the statistics. None of the states that have adopted constitutional carry have dropped it. The hysteria created by the left is a farce.

The NRA backed HB 272 and in spite of the ASA desperately trying to stop it, it finally passed and was signed into law.

The National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) today applauds Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey for signing House Bill 272, NRA-backed legislation that allows law-abiding Alabamians to carry a handgun for personal protection without paying a tax or obtaining a license from the state.

“The NRA worked tirelessly with state leaders and legislators to pass the most significant pro-Second Amendment measure in Alabama history,” said NRA-ILA Executive Director Jason Ouimet. “We thank Gov. Ivey, bill author Rep. Shane Stringer, legislative leaders, and every lawmaker who supported this landmark legislation.”

HB 272 does not affect previously issued permits to carry and allows those who still wish to obtain a permit in order to carry in states recognizing Alabama’s permits to do so.  It also does not allow anyone prohibited under state or federal law from possessing a firearm to carry a firearm.

NRA-ILA

A portion of that statement is something anti-gunners always miss: These laws do not allow anyone already prohibited from purchasing or carrying a firearm to carry one.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Permitting laws do not keep people safer. They do not ensure that people carrying guns pass background checks. They only ensure that legal gun owners pass background checks. Criminals, not so much. Also, they are redundant – it’s already a Federal law that to purchase a firearm you have to “pass a background check.” It’s ridiculous to have to pass those things twice. And having to obtain government permission to carry a gun to protect yourself and your family, or even the people around you is not productive. Criminals don’t obey the law.

All in all, thanks to Gov Ivey and the hard work of several legislators who worked on HB 272, Alabama is now the 22nd state to no longer require government permisson to carry. It joins Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
