Following latest attack, NYC police commish wonders aloud if ‘Knockout’ is urban legend

Suspect Amrit Marajh being taken into police custodyAbout the only positive takeaway from the two latest iterations of the ‘Knockout game’ infesting our cities is that there were no fatalities. Possibly the worst takeaway is the reaction of New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly to an incident last Friday in Brooklyn’s Borough Community, which is predominantly Orthodox-Jewish. Kelly told the New York Times:

We’re trying to determine whether or not this is a real phenomenon. I mean, yes, something like this can happen. But we would like to have people come forward and give us any information they have.

Besides entertaining the possibility that this rash of senseless black-on-white brutality is an urban myth, the police commissioner also expressed a reluctance to affirm that the burgeoning targeting of Orthodox Jews constitutes hate crimes.

A hate crime enhancement was added to charges of assault and with aggravated harassment facing the Borough Park attacker, Amrit Marajh, 28. He and a group of fellow goons surrounded a 24-year-old man in traditional Jewish garb at 2:45 a.m. on Friday. Police said the four men had been out celebrating and were “somewhat intoxicated.” The victim, whose name is being withheld, told authorities he overheard the group discussing “how you knock somebody out.” Shortly afterward, he became the latest statistic in a crime wave that exhibits as much cowardice as it does anything else.

An hour away, in Philadelphia, a similar scenario was playing out. Breitbart News reports that a South Philadelphia man cruising on his bicycle was set upon by a gang of black thugs and senselessly beaten. Detectives on the case told NBC 10 said the group of eight attackers was comprised of five teen males and three females.

At least the citizens in Philly are not in denial. Breitbart News notes that a group that calks itself “Taking Our South Philadelphia Streets Back” has developed a Facebook presence meant to alert city leaders and the Mayor to galvanize forces and put an end to this dangerous game. The group’s leader Marc Ferguson writes:

Our citizens are sick and tired of living in fear due to teens thinking this is a game. I am hereby calling upon the District Attorney, Mayor Michael Nutter, City Council and all of Philadelphia’s legislators to come together and KNOCK OUT The Knock Out Game.

The only problem with this initiative is that when vigilante groups begin doing the job law enforcement is paid to do, events have a way of spiraling out of control. As noted in an earlier column, black leaders, including the president, have remained silent about this epidemic. It is a safe guess that they will not only speak up but lead candlelit vigils the second the first black perp of one of these fatuous crimes ends up on a morgue slab. It would be in everyone’s best interest if they spoke up now and spared the nation the inevitable headache that will ensue later on.
