On Tuesday, Jon Ossoff, the Democrat seeking the House seat in Georgia formerly held by Republican Tom Price, lost the special election, but you’d never know that judging from the coverage. On Wednesday, so-called “mainstream media” outlets hailed his loss as a “symbolic” victory over Pres. Trump, Newsbusters said in multiple reports.
According to Newsbusters:
MSNBC on Wednesday touted the “extremely close” “symbolic” “victory” for Democrats in Georgia’s special election, seeing the failure to win as a “sign of hope.” MSNBC Live host Stephanie Ruhle also chastised Trump, saying, “President Trump weighing in, going in on a new tweet, really a tirade against the Democrat.”
Hyping John Ossoff’s failed effort to win outright against 11 Republicans, Ruhle noted the Democrat “did not win the 50 percent needed to take the traditionally red state, but he came extremely close.” She added, “Democrats across the nation, they’re telling a story that this is a huge victory or a symbolic one.”
“Well, I think it’s more than symbolic, it’s a sign, they hope, of things to come,” said reporter Ron Allen.
But there’s more.
Another report from Newsbusters said:
Despite falling short of the 50% of votes needed to win Tuesday night, ABC’s Good Morning America crowned Democratic hopeful Jon Ossoff as the victor of last night’s special election in Georgia. Correspondent Cecilia Vega and anchor George Stephanopoulos gushed over the “rookie” who came “just short” of “winning the whole thing.” GMA used the race’s closeness as a reason to bash Trump while political analyst John Avlon spun that Democrats had “an emotional victory.”
Vega began her report touting this race was a judgement on the president. Its “being called a referendum on President Trump,” she gushed, adding that Democrats hoped to “deliver a knock-out punch to President Trump.” After noting that Trump took credit for helping to stop Ossoff’s momentum, Vega again criticized that Ossoff getting less than 50% of the votes was actually a bad sign for Republicans.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer castigated the media for its upside-down reporting, Newsbusters added in a third report:
During Wednesday’s White House briefing, NBC reporter Hallie Jackson asked if President Trump was “expending too much political capital on a race that Republicans should be winning easily,” referring to Georgia’s special congressional election. In response, Press Secretary Sean Spicer blasted the absurd liberal media narrative that it was a “symbolic” or “emotional” victory for Democrats despite their candidate falling short.
“I thought that some of the coverage was a little intriguing as I watched it….Democrats went all in on this race. They spent over $8.3 million. They said on the record that their goal was to win this race. They lost. And the reaction has somewhat been, you know, that they almost won. No, they lost,” Spicer declared.
“Intriguing” isn’t exactly the word I would use…
