On Wednesday, House Republicans brought forward legislation strengthening protections for babies who survive attempted abortions. The measure passed on a largely partisan vote. One Democrat voted in favor of the bill, while another voted “present.” Other Democrats, however, actually argued in favor of letting the infants die instead of providing medical care.
According to Breitbart:
The measure, called the “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act,” passed 220–210. All Republicans voted in favor of it, while two Democrats, Reps. Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez, both of South Texas, defected from their party, voting in favor of the bill and “present,” respectively.
The bill would require medical providers to treat babies born alive after a botched abortion with the same level of care as they would any other newborn, and it adds penalties for violators.
Arguments presented by some Democrats can only be described as evil. Consider this from Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y):
The problem with this bill is not that it makes anything , its not that it provides any new protection for infants. The problem with this bill is it endangers some infants in saying that infant must immediately be brought to the hospital. Where depending on the circumstances that may be the right thing to do for the health and survival of that infant. Or it may not. That is the problem with this bill. It directs and mandates a certain medical care which may not be appropriate which may endanger the life of the infant.
Got that? He just argued that providing life-saving medical care to these infants endangers them.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., made a similar argument:

Rep. Ann Wagner, the Missouri Republican who sponsored the bill, celebrated its passage in a statement:
Thanks to our efforts, after dozens of unanimous consent requests, two discharge petitions, and countless hours of advocacy work, the House has finally taken action to ensure that every single baby born in the United States receives lifesaving medical care at their most vulnerable moment.
