It is suspected that a speeding vehicle deliberately crashed into a group of eight pedestrians last night in Sunnyvale, California. The FBI is assisting California DPS in the investigation. FBI confirmed agents interviewed the suspect last night. Sunnyvale PD asked the FBI to assist. FBI will only take on a larger role if it’s determined a federal crime was committed.

Officers responded to the area of El Camino Real/Sunnyvale Ave this afternoon where preliminary investigations show a driver may have deliberately driven into a group of pedestrians. Police responded to the call of a major injury accident at around 7:30 p.m. at El Camino Real and Sunnyvale Saratoga Rd. Witnesses stated that the driver appeared to accelerate and made no attempt to stop. He careened through the pedestrians and into a tree. The pedestrians were in the crosswalk or on the sidewalk at the time. The driver is currently in custody. In spite of the damage to the car, the driver did not sustain injuries.
One of the victims was 13 years old; all of them were transported to local hospitals. Their conditions are unknown at this time. [Fox reported a 13 year old girl, other news services reported a 13 year old boy. It is unclear which is correct.] Victim’s belongings were strewn across the street after the crash. At least 6 ambulances were dispatched.
“Some of the statements (from witnesses) show that the driver did not try to avoid the pedestrians at the crosswalk, and there was no attempt to swerve, drive away or break.” Police Captain Jim Choi
Police stated that it appeared that the pedestrians had the walk signal and were attempting to cross the street when they were hit. The Sunnyvale DPS could not rule out “domestic terrorism,” but stated that it was “too early” to make that determination. It is interesting that the name of the suspect has not been released.

If the incident is ruled as deliberate, the driver will face charges of Assault With a Deadly Weapon.
