Departments of Education Now Taking Over Daycare In The United States
States are looking for new ways to get federal tax dollars and one of these is to have the federal Department of Education take over preschool programs. In many states, parents see these programs as a way to have childcare while they are at work. The states that are giving control to the federal government are requiring these programs, many of which are struggling, to meet educational standards that will mean new teachers and expensive changes. This will mean more money going to the states, though. This, as the states are flush with cash from the billions handed out for the COVID issues.
Changing Landscape
Many states are moving to give more educational regulation to daycare for children before they head to kindergarten. Some of this is coming from experts that say this is a chance to help these children be better prepared for when they get to regular school.
This means the states need to create new government agencies to handle the new work. It also causes the states to look for new streams of income to be able to pay for all of this new bureaucracy. This opens up these programs to becoming unionized under the NEA or AFT.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
Regulatory Compliance
One of the ways that Virginia is handling this is by saying any location with two or more children will now have to be regulated by the Virginia Department of Education. This is moving away from a program that was so intense in regulation that it even regulated the type of mulch that was used by the daycare. The state has not decided on every rule, but this is becoming common in many states. Many of the people in charge of representing daycares see it as a good move. The history of government involvement means that many should wonder what will happen.
Teacher Shortage
There is already a shortage of teachers in many areas and this will increase the need for them. That means that increasing the need will just highlight that people are not wanting to work in the profession. Preschool education is a better area to work in than some, but there are also different classes they will have to take in school.
It can also make childcare less affordable when parents get the bill for having to pay for these teachers. The costs will mean that some parents may pull their kids, which means less income for these programs. The costs will have to be balanced with tax dollars.
While none of this seems to be involved with the US Department of Education, it comes down to the fact that it will start having oversight of the state-level efforts. This will mean Congress will want to make new laws and spend more tax dollars. Unions will want to have control. This is how education has been changed in a bad way in the United States and it seems to be growing.
