Democrat Jim Kenney, Says Only Police Should Have Guns After Two Philly Officers Shot

Democrat Jim Kenney, the Philly Mayor, suggested that only police officers should have guns after two officers were shot during the city’s 4th of July celebration on Monday. The two officers were shot near the Philadelphia Museum of Art as the fireworks and concert were coming to an end. Both officers were treated and released. The shooting at Benjamin Franklin Parkway was another addition to the litany of Philly’s high crime rate.

It was a chilled back day, beautiful weather. But we live in America where we have the Second Amendment and we have the Supreme Court of the United States telling everybody they can carry a gun wherever they want…I was in Canada two weeks ago and never thought about a gun. The only people I knew who had guns in Canada were police officers. That’s the way it should be here…If I had the ability to take care of guns, I would. But the legislature won’t let us. Congress won’t let us. The governor does the best he can [and] the attorney general does the best he can, but this is a gun country.”

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney (Breitbart)

His statement is wrong on a couple of levels: the Supreme Court didn’t say that a state couldn’t regulate concealed carry at all, they said that “shall issue” is constitutionally correct, but “may issue” is not. Subjective rules for the Second Amendment are wrong – the laws must be based on the right to keep and bear arms, not a bunch of bureaucrats’ personal dislike for firearms. Saying that “everyone can carry a gun whenever they want” is just so much leftist propaganda.

Secondly, Canada’s police have not been particularly nice to ordinary citizens over the last several months. Power corrupts – a principal Mr Kenney would only know if he cracked open a history book or watched a decent newscast.

And that wasn’t all he said that brought backlash: he stated that he will be “happy” when he’s not Mayor anymore from worrying over the safety at events. His comments were blasted as “asinine” and some called for him to resign. That would make him happy, right?

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

“I’m concerned every single day…I’m waiting for something bad to happen all the time. I’ll be happy when I’m not mayor and I can enjoy some stuff.”

Mayor Kenney (MSN)

He tried to walk back his statement later in the day by saying that it was just a “moment of frustration.” The problem with Philadelphia of late is that citizens have become fed up with the city’s sky-high crime rate. Concealed permit applications are up 600% as residents seek to defend themselves from criminals, according to Breitbart on April 1.

When Kenney came into office, he ran on a platform that promised to remove “stop and frisk” from police tactics. On top of it, the city’s District Attorney, Larry Krasner, has come under scrutiny for his lax enforcement of crime and gun laws. Many citizens have been talking with the Fraternal Order of Police Union, wondering when Stop and Frisk will be reinstated in a constitutional manner.
