Dem Rep. who suggested Second Amendment option against Trump touts anti-gun events

On Monday, Fox News and others reported that Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., suggested a “Second Amendment” option against President Trump while addressing constituents in Long Island.

“I mean, this is where the Second Amendment comes in quite frankly, because you know, what if the president was to ignore the courts? What would you do? What would we do?” he asked.

“It’s really a matter of putting public pressure on the president,” he added.

“The Second Amendment is the right to bear arms,” he said after a constituent asked him to explain the amendment. “That’s why we have it.”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

His comment sparked a great deal of anger.

“This video is incredibly disturbing. It’s surreal to watch a sitting member of Congress suggest that his constituents should take up arms against the president of the United States,” said NRCC spokesman Chris Martin.

“When resistance and obstruction don’t work out, Tom Suozzi proposes violence,” Martin said in a statement, according to Fox News. “He’s completely out of touch.”

The Hill reported:

Suozzi’s primary opponent Joshua Sauberman (D) told The Hill that he was present and was “dismayed” at the remarks.

“Mr. Suozzi should have had the common sense to know that there are constitutionally acceptable ways to remove a president such as impeachment or the 25th Amendment,” Sauberman said.

“I personally think that there is a strong case for removing Trump by the 25th Amendment; especially, given the president’s erratic tweeting during Shabbat. Despite this, as Congressman, Mr. Suozzi refused to sign on to a letter by Congressional Democrats calling for Trump’s impeachment, which makes Suozzi’s sudden embrace of the Second Amendment all the more bizarre,” he said.

Moreover, Suozzi’s Facebook’s page is filled with posts advocating an anti-gun event being held on March 24.

“This Saturday teenagers throughout the country are organizing 817 rallies for gun violence prevention. There are 6 events in my Congressional District. Please attend one and send a message to Washington DC!” he wrote.

According to Fox News:

A spokesperson for Suozzi denied that the congressman was calling for “armed insurrection” against Trump.

“Taking a page from such great Americans as Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and Alexander Hamilton, Congressman Suozzi explained why our founding fathers created the Second Amendment as a way for citizens to fight back against a tyrannical government that does not follow the rule of law,” senior adviser Kim Devlin said in a Monday statement to Fox News.

Devlin added: “To suggest his comments meant anything else or that he was advocating for an armed insurrection against the existing president is both irresponsible and ridiculous.”
