Iran announced that it has arrested 17 members of a CIA spy ring, and has sentenced some of them to death as “corrupters on Earth.” At least that’s the official story. Not everyone believes it, however.

Most of the time when giving a press conference, the Iranian official identifies himself. In this press announcement, the identification was generic. He was only identified as a “director of the counterespionage department” of Iran’s Intelligence Ministry.
The FARS state-run media reported that 17 CIA spies were arrested in “unlinked cells” within the country, and that the operation was concluded in March 2019 (although they again claimed it in June). While part of the report talked about recruiting spies from the population of Iranians, the rest of the article seemed aimed at Americans. They released photos of business cards, probably being used as evidence of alleged contacts with US officials from Zimbabwe to Finland, and even Austria.

They released photos of people whose identities were not immediately known, but appeared to be American- it would be odd that any Americans living in Iran would keep incriminating documents in their possession, if they were a CIA spy ring. A few of the photos were meant to tug at heartstrings, as they contained pictures of families with children.
FARS wrote: “Collecting classified information from substantial centers as well as intelligence-technical operations, were the assigned missions to this network, according to the official.
He said all individuals had been trained by CIA officers in complicated courses about how to set up a safe communication from inside Iran to abroad.
CIA has used intelligence concealment containers to transfer safe communication tools and super advanced spywares for its network in Iran. Most of these containers had been prepared in shape of stones and those mentioned tools were embedded inside and spies have been assigned to retrieve them from different urban districts like parks, mountains, and so on, by using a complex procedure.
“Using containers, CIA has also sent fake identification documents for its spies in order to be used for special operations. Investigations showed that CIA has used governmental fabrication unprofessionally to provide these bogus documents. After discovery of this subject by counter espionage, CIA officers ordered their spies to evanesce all available documents,” the official added…
...According to the official, individuals who knowingly and deliberately betrayed the country and refused to compensate for the losses, have been handed over to the judiciary system.
“Others, who honestly cooperated with the security system and their remorsefulness have been proved, have been managed with intelligence direction against Americans,” he added.
If these arrests for a CIA spy ring are real, it appears that we may once again have a kind of hostage situation on our hands. Iran has been pulling the tail of the lion now for weeks. This lion may bite back sooner than they think.
