Champaign, Illinois Mayor Bans Sale of Guns, Ammo in Coronavirus Executive Order

Who is in power matters, and it matters a lot. A case in point occurred in the town of Champaign, Illinois. Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen signed an Executive Order because of the coronavirus that gives her “extraordinary powers.” A council meeting this morning was set to talk about an ordinance based on her EO. They passed the ordinance unanimously.

One of the points of her declaration bans the sale of firearms and alcohol. Her town of 90,000 people has no cases of coronavirus yet, by the way. There are multiple Constitutional issues in her action.

It’s almost a declaration of martial law or one of those orders the King of England floated that caused the Revolutionary War. It’s a massive power grab using the coronavirus as an excuse.

WAND TV reported some of the power grabs in her order:

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

  • Violating parts of the Open Meetings Act

  • Ban sale of firearms and ammunition

  • Ban sale of any alcohol

  • Closing of all bars, taverns, liquor stores, etc

  • Ban sale or giving away of gasoline or other liquid flammable or combustible products in any container other than a gasoline tank permanently fixed to a motor vehicle

  • Direct the shutoff of power, water, gas, etc

  • Take possession of private property and obtain full title to same

  • Prohibit or restrict ingress and egress to and from the City

“The executive order allows the city to be flexible to properly respond to the emergency needs of our community. None of the options will necessarily will be implemented but are available in order to protect the welfare and safety of our community if needed,” Jeff Hamilton the City of Champaign’s Communications Manager”

That’s “flexible?” Banning the sale of alcohol? Banning the sale of firearms? The order also includes these gems: “Suspend or limit the use of the water resources or other infrastructure. (17) Control, restrict, allocate, or regulate the use, sale, production, or distribution of food, water, fuel, clothing, and/or other commodities, materials, goods, services and resources.”

She gave herself permission to institute a curfew. She gave herself permission to seize private property and snag the title to it. She thinks it would be ok to turn off the power – if someone’s sick and it’s still winter that’s a stupid idea. Is she trying to ‘decrease the surplus population?’

She didn’t give herself permission to ban the sale of marijuana. Wonder why.

We ask you – what the heck does any of that have to do with a health crisis? People are sick and in need of care and yes the “ingress and egress” could come into play, but how does the rest of it have any relevance? It doesn’t. It’s a raw power grab by a liberal Democrat with a Napoleon complex.

Now here’s a conundrum: President Trump invoked the Stafford Act this afternoon. That act SPECIFICALLY prohibits the government from seizing firearms. The act recognizes the need for protection in case of emergency within the nation. Apparently this Mayor thinks just the opposite.

You might say, gee she’s not banning the firearms exactly, just the sale of them. Still unconstitutional. The alcohol, the seizing of property…the city council stated they hoped these stipulations wouldn’t be needed in this emergency. They should never have been included in the declaration in the first place.

The Mayor of Champaign seems to have her emergency wires crossed. But it is a harbinger of having the wrong people in power in the country – an emergency declaration like this in Champaign, Illinois spawned an ordinance of the same.

According to CapitolFax, the wording in the ordinance appears copy/pasted, and has little relevance to the coronavirus issue. Way to go, elected officials in Champaign, Illinois.
