Champaign Council Denies Passing Sweeping Powers For Mayor
Illinois – The Champaign Council is now denying they gave sweeping powers to Mayor Deborah Feinen. Their passage of an ordinance based on her Executive Order (that gave her powers which appeared to be unconstitutional) has a new twist: now they’ve posted a disclaimer that says those were all “fake news.” After the news media hit them hard, of course. But yes, they did that, it’s in the official ordinance. Did anyone actually read the thing before they passed it?

The Champaign council passed the ordinance we previously reported based on the Executive Order of Mayor Deborah Feinen to prepare for coronavirus at around 11 a.m. on Friday. Now they are trying to claim they didn’t pass sweeping powers, after numerous media outlets nailed them on their action. Here is their ‘damage control’ press release:
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
They’re calling their action “anticipatory” and they haven’t actually implemented the law yet. They shouldn’t implement anything until attorneys go through it line by line. Maybe delete some of the more egregious portions that have absolutely nothing to do with the coronavirus.
As we noted before from Capitol Fax, parts of the content of her Executive Order and the ordinance appeared to be copy/pasted from another law. Did they bother to actually READ the order before they voted on it? Apparently not. Must have been listening to the voice of Nancy Pelosi telling them to ‘pass it before they read it.’ It came back to bite them in the rear end.
Under “Exhibit A” in the ordinance passed by the council are lists of things they could do in case of a declaration of emergency. Among them were the items we wrote about: a ban on sales of firearms and alcohol, seizure of property, etc.
Here is a comparison of what was actually passed and what the city claims from cu-underground.
So in typical liberal brilliance, they’ve shot themselves in the foot and are trying to cover their butts. They could have just said, ‘dang we didn’t read the whole ordinance.’ But it would be admitting stupidity and they can’t have that!
