Capitol Barricade Rammed, Suspect Sets Car on Fire, Starts Shooting, Then Kills Himself

Weird.

A suspect named Richard York III, 29, slammed his car into a Capitol barricade in DC early Sunday morning. As he was exiting the vehicle it burst into flames. After firing random shots in the air, he turned the gun on himself. The suspect is from Delaware. The car did not appear to catch fire due to the collision with the Capitol barricade, so police believe he may have set it on fire himself.

———- UPDATE:  2:45 p.m. ———-

Next of kin has been notified in relation to this morning’s incident. The man has been identified as 29-year old Richard A. York the 3rd of Delaware. It is still not clear why he chose to drive to the Capitol Complex.

———- ORIGINAL NEWS RELEASE ———-

Just after 4:00 a.m., a man drove his car into the vehicle barricade at East Capitol Street and Second Street.

While the man was getting out of the car, it became engulfed in flames.

The man then fired several shots into the air along East Capitol Street.

When our officers heard the sound of gunfire, they immediately responded and were approaching the man when he shot himself.

Nobody else was hurt.

At this time, it does not appear the man was targeting any Members of Congress, who are on recess, and it does not appear officers fired their weapons.

Our investigators are looking into the man’s background.

DC’s Metropolitan Police Department is handling the death investigation.

US Capitol Police press release

Richard York III had addresses in both Delaware and Pennsylvania, and a criminal record stretching back about 10 years, according to Stripes.

Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger said officers did not hear the man say anything before he opened fire “indiscriminately” in the street with a handgun and walked toward the Capitol building. Authorities are investigating whether the man may have set his car on fire, the chief said, because the collision did not appear to cause the blaze.

Twitter is awash with calling the suspect a MAGA supporter and someone who rammed the Capitol barricade because of the Mar-a-Lago Raid, and that all Trump supporters hate cops. But there is no evidence at this point about motive, nor is there any information on this man’s political bent- if he had one. As usual, Twitter users are being as hateful as possible.
