At rush hour in New York City on Tuesday, the Brooklyn subway at the 36th Street station came under attack. At least 13 people were injured after a man set off a device inside one of the cars, then opened fire. Several unexploded devices were also found, although the NYPD specifically stated there were no active explosive devices there. FBI, ATF, are on scene assisting the NYPD. One former DC homicide detective, Ted Williams, stated it was obviously a planned event. At this early stage the motivation for this attack is unknown.
UPDATE: 10 people were shot, 28 injured in this incident. (Fox)
A law enforcement source told Fox News Digital the suspect is described as a Black male, wearing an MTA uniform, a gas mask and “carrying a bookbag.” NYPD Counterterrorism units are responding to the scene, while additional units, including police K9s and heavy weaponry, have been deployed to subway stations around New York City, the high-ranking law enforcement source added.
The victims were transported to area hospitals, including NYU Langone and NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist. The Department of Education confirmed that schools nearby were sheltering in place.
The incident began at around 8:30 a.m. at the Brooklyn subway station for the D, N, an R Lines in Sunset Park. The suspect was described as a Black man about 5’5″ and 170 pounds, wearing an orange vest and gas mask. His clothing was reportedly similar to an MTA worker. He allegedly dropped a “cylinder that sparked at the top,” according to a witness in the New York Post. The suspect is still at large.
Videos and images of blood-stained subway platforms and bloody subway cars flooded social media. The shooting victims stumbled off the train when it came to a stop at the 36th street station. It appears that a smoke device was set off inside the train, then the shooter opened fire. At this writing, at least one or two people are in critical condition; all of the victims were taken to local hospitals. At this time the information is that 5 people were shot, the rest injured in some way that is currently unclear.
