‘Biden presiding over Dem effort to crush rights,’ says gun group

Biden
Joe Biden is presiding over an effort to trample the Second Amendment, say gun right activists.

Now that Joe Biden is in the White House, he is presiding over an attack on the Second Amendment that may be unprecedented, and he hasn’t even unleashed his own agenda, he’s just allowing others to do it, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms intimated in a statement Monday.

Biden, a perennial gun control proponent, seems to be standing aside to allow vehemently anti-gun Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin to take point. The other day, Durbin declared in a message on Twitter that gun control is going to be a “top priority” now that Democrats control both the Senate and House of Representatives.

So CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb issued a statement in which he observed, “Durbin’s hostility toward the Second Amendment is well known in the gun rights community. He has a history of supporting extremist gun control legislation, so his threat to make gun control a priority must be taken seriously.”

Over on the House side, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee has unveiled—without a single co-sponsor so far—H.R. 127, a bill Gottlieb called “insanity on steroids.” When that remark was published at Ammoland News, it went viral almost immediately.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

According to a CCRKBA news release, H.R. 127 would require the owner of any firearm to supply the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with the make, model and serial number of every gun he or she owns, and that includes firearms people may have owned for years. They would also have to report the identity of any person to whom, and any period of time during which, the firearm will be loaned to that individual.

It’s not clear whether making such a law retroactive is legal, but that would have to be sorted out in court.

The licensing requirement mandates that the license applicant undergoes a criminal background check, and then submits to a psychological evaluation to determine whether the person is psychologically unsuited to possess a firearm. Successful licensees must show they have an insurance policy which will cost $800.

Again, a mandate requiring a psychological test in order to exercise a constitutionally guaranteed right is certain to draw multiple court challenges.

“Over the years,” Gottlieb said, “we’ve seen some astonishingly bad legislation originate on Capitol Hill, but this one takes the term ‘abomination’ to an entirely new level. One look at this bill and you wonder whether Congresswoman Jackson Lee ever heard of the Bill of Rights, which includes the Second Amendment.”

There has been no reaction from either Durbin or Jackson Lee.
