Is the Bible about to be Outlawed in California?

[Ed. – The following is a guest post by Dr. Bill Wells, mayor of the City of El Cajon, California, regarding AB 2943, a measure that, if passed, could ban certain books in California, including the Bible.  Reprinted here with permission.]

I need to say this: “California has lost its collective mind.” From the horribly misguided and partisan Sanctuary State law to the suicidal Car Tax and Cap and Trade laws California runs the spectrum from downright silly to downright dangerous. Things however can get much worse. This week the California Assembly has passed AB 2943 which is an abominable impulse toward secular totalitarianism, and overt hostility to religious liberty, that should frighten all Americans.

The crux of this law states that “Advertising, offering to engage in, or engaging in sexual orientation change efforts with an individual” as illegal under state’s consumer fraud law. Sexual orientation change efforts is defined as “any practices that seek to change an individual’s sexual orientation. This includes efforts to change behaviors or gender expressions, or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward individuals of the same sex.”

This includes Psychologists or Psychiatrists. On the surface the concept is to prevent “Conversion Therapy.” This is the concept that people, usually minors, would be subjected to attempts to “cure” them of homosexuality, or transgenderism. This practice is controversial and is a favorite straw man of gay activists. This Bill, however, would prevent an adult from setting their own therapeutic goals regardless of their own desires. For example, if there was a person who was in a traditional marriage or relationship and was bothered by feelings of same sex attraction, and that person wanted to explore these issues with a therapist, that therapist would be in jeopardy of being sued if he or she agreed to do this. Even more disturbing, let’s say that there was rape or molestation in this person’s past and they truly did not know if their same sex attraction issues had a little, a lot, or nothing to do with the trauma — the therapist could still not engage in the therapeutic process if one of the possible goals was to sublimate or diminish the role of the homosexual or transgender identity.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Another insidious aspect of this Bill is the provision that if any money exchanges hands, no opposing view to the homosexual world view would be tolerated. If you were at a Christian conference and you paid a fee to attend, any Pastor who or speaker who spoke negatively about homosexuality would put the hosting church and him or herself at risk of a lawsuit. In fact any book sold at that conference which had a negative view of homosexuality or transgenderism would put the conference, the church and the author at the same risk. I ask you, where does this leave the Bible? Is the Bible outlawed in California now?

Lest you think I am unqualified to weigh in on this, I own a behavioral healthcare company. I have a doctorate in Clinical Psychology and have 25-years experience in behavioral medicine. I am also the Mayor of the City of El Cajon. I understand that most people of the Democrat party are reasonable people that want what is best for themselves and their neighbors. The State of California though has been hijacked by ultra radical leftists that are giving into their totalitarian impulses. They do this because they have a super-majority in the legislature, not of Democrats, but of these ultra radicals. Make no mistake, these impulses lean towards the destruction of all that is Christian. The hostility is overt and calculated and it is coming to your state next.
