Armed School Employee Stops Kidnapping Attempt

Ogden, Utah – On May 25, at around 2:30 p.m., an armed school employee stopped the possible attempted kidnapping of an eleven year old girl at a playground at Lincoln Elementary School. There were 19 other children on the playground at the time of the incident.

A 41 year old suspect approached the 11 year old girl and pulled her toward him, as if he intended to leave with her. The armed school employee saw what was happening, confronted the suspect, and demanded that he leave the playground. He dropped the arm of the girl, giving the employee time to usher the students into a nearby classroom. But the suspect wasn’t done. (The Epoch Times)

The suspect, identified as Ira Cox-Berry, 41, then walked to the classroom and began “punching” the window in what appeared to be an attempt to gain entry. The armed school employee drew his weapon, while simultaneously calling 911. He held Cox-Berry at gunpoint until officers arrived. Ogden Police arrested the man after a brief struggle.

This employee is protected under the Second Amendment. He followed all policy and procedure at the school, and in this particular case, did everything that he should have done to protect the innocent lives of the children at the school.

And in this case, it is likely that a life was saved or injury to a life was prevented due to the actions of this heroic employee.

This teacher, in particular, was very prepared emotionally to confront a suspect he didn’t know, that was most likely on drugs, could be dangerous, could have been armed, and he took it upon himself to protect and be a hero, frankly, for the children who are on scene there when this went down.

Ogden Police Lt Brian Eynon to the Daily Mail

Parents of the girl stated they didn’t know Cox-Berry, and police said they were trying to figure out if he knew her. Ogden Police spokesman Lt. Brian Eynon said the Cox-Berry may have been under the influence of narcotics at the time. The suspect is being held at the Weber county jail on a Felony charge of Attempted First Degree Child Kidnapping.

Police stated that the armed school employee was “lawfully in possession of the weapon.” This is exactly the purpose of arming school employees, whether teachers, maintenance employees or security officials.

Utah is a Constitutional Carry state after first term Governor Spencer Cox signed the bill into law in February. The armed school employee (who was not named by request) did have a concealed carry permit, according to an Ogden Police press release.

In regard to schools, Utah schools grades K-12, are not gun free zones. It is also legal to carry a firearm on college campuses and universities, although some colleges still require permission. The Utah standard carry permit or provisional permits are required at this time for carry on school grounds – it is unclear if that will eventually change subject to the new legislation from February.

It is LEGAL to carry a firearm in and on the grounds of any Public or private school premises, including charter schools and religious schools (kindergarten through 12th-grade schools), public or private institution of higher education (colleges and universities), Preschool and child care facilities.

Teachers do not need to receive permission to carry a firearm or notify anyone that they are carrying a concealed firearm. Always have your firearm concealed on your body at all times. The firearm CANNOT be in a desk, briefcase, or bag where a student or anyone else may gain access to or steal the firearm.

Utah carry laws

This armed school employee is being hailed as a hero for doing what must be done to protect the lives of children under their charge.
